Hello from a Cubs fan...
Hi, I'm Dan/dtpollitt over at Bleed Cubbie Blue, the Cubs' site in the SportsBlog Nation. I am interviewing for a PhD program at KU early next week and would like to make my first visit to Kauffman. I thought I would enlist the help of the experts for some advice...
I am a 24 year old graduate student interviewing for a doctorate program in education at the University of Kansas on Monday the 7th. I live in Minnesota and am a die hard Cubbies fan. I'd appreciate any help the Royals can give by beating those damn Twins and shutting up their fans up here!
I am planning on attending the night game vs. Oakland on Wednesday. I have never been to the Kansas City/Lawrence area, do not know anyone down in Kansas yet, and would like to meet up with or sit with a few of you regulars at the ballpark if there are tickets available wherever you all sit. I travel down to spring training every few years or so with my father and have been to Surprise quite a few times.
If you can recommend a few of the following, I would be greatly appreciative:
--Decent hotels to stay at in the Lawrence area
--A few tourism or sightseeing places to check out during my few days of stay
--Tips or hints for getting good seats, seeing a bit of batting practice, bars, etc.
--If anyone would care to have a baseball enthusiast join them for the game next Wednesday, I would gladly meet you
Thanks so much for your help, I appreciate it.
Dan/dtpollitt

Great to have a visitor
I'd recommend the Springhill Suites on the river. They're a bit pricey, but you can walk from there to Mass Street, the main pedestrian retail/restaurant district. The Eldridge Hotel, a historic hotel, is also on that drag - I have no idea what their prices are like. If you're looking for something cheaper and closer to campus, there are a bunch of hotels near campus on Iowa Street.

I'll third the Negro League Museum. Its located at 18th and Vine, just between downtown and the Sports Complex off I-70. There's also an American Jazz Museum there if you want to check that out. For good food, there is a great soul food place there called "The Peachtree". I think its kind of dressy though.
You should check out the Country Club Plaza. Its a high end retail/restaurant district. I wouldn't buy anything, but its a lovely place to stroll, people watch, catch a drink (there's a good sports bar called "810 Zone" on Broadway) and hang out by the fountains. The Plaza is located in midtown Kansas City. Nearby is the Nelson-Atkins Art Gallery, easily the best art museum in the midwest outside of Chicago. They just opened a new wing that has opened to rave reviews.
If you're not museumed out, there is a new museum in Kansas City that has opened to rave reviews - the World War I Museum. Its the only one in the country and its first rate from what I hear. Its located at Liberty Memorial, across from Union Station. Its got some great interactive exhibits and if you stand on the observation deck of Liberty Memorial you get the absolute best view of downtown Kansas City.

I would join you but its softball night. Best of luck in your interview! Hope you end up here and become part of our Royals Review community (Cubbies are my NL team - I'm a glutton for punishment).

RR's KC suggestions are perfect. Also, get some good BBQ while you're here. Everyone has a different favorite, mine is Arthur Bryant's (a few blocks from the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum). Have fun!
