BOD: Boyfriend of the Day May 9, 2007
Well, I'm glad I went tonight. Despite the rain and some very unsavory fans, I am very much happy.
Before getting into tonight's award, I just want to say one thing to all of the boo birds that show up to Kauffman Stadium ritualistically: go the hell away. I am sick and TIRED of listening to you bitch and moan about the Royals. I am tired of listening to you boo Sweeney and Gordon and Teahen and anyone else on the team that doesn't meet up to you're impossible 'they must hit 1.000' standards. I am tired of putting up with your constant drone of insults added to injury. If you want to follow a team where you don't have to worry about losses, then go watch the fucking Cardinals or Red Sox or Yankees, because I am through with you. And if you can't give your players, your team the RESPECT that they DESERVE, then YOU don't deserve to wear Royal Blue.
Now. On to brighter pastures! Our boyfriend tonight is none other than Mark Teahen.

Teahen went 2 for 3 tonight, those 2 hits being doubles. He also drew a walk and scored a run. Add yet another outfield assist to this stellar offensive performance and you've got quite a pretty picture to look at.
For smitten kitten tonight, we're going to have two. Our first is Gil Meche.

Gil threw 6 innings, allowing 3 hits, 1 earned run, and striking out 7. Sure he may have walked 4, but he kept them from scoring. And in tonight's pitcher's duel, I certainly think that Meche won. Anyone else want to sound off on it?
Our second smitten kitten is Mike Sweeney.

The captain, despite the boo birds being out in full force managed to bring us the clutchy 8th inning home run. And that, in my book, is enough to win a smitten kitten. I forgot to mention that Sweeney's homerun officially put him at 2nd most career home runs by a Royal, behind George Brett. Congrats, Sweeney. You deserve some recognition for your loyalty through the bad years!
Never forget, my friends, that Benny is on our side!

I took some good shots at the game and should be taking some more tomorrow; look for an update either here or at my blog (details on that either tomorrow or Friday).
Edit: If anyone is planning on going tomorrow, leave a note and maybe we can try and meet up somewhere during the game!

Oh, the dark horse Mr. T pick
Too bad the lineup couldn't give Meche the win (it'd have been easy to do in the 5th and 6th), but neither of those were Teahen or Sweeney's fault.

Thanks, loyal2!
I love sporting the blue at the ballpark (not something you see too often even among our most diehard fans).
Although I think Emil Brown deserves to be booed. Of course, he didn't play tonight (wonder if that's Bell punishment. That tough ol' bird!)

I don't mind players that deserve it
What I don't appreciate is people booing the one guy who gives a fucking rip about Kansas City and has spent his entire career in the league's worst franchise. He's shown fucking loyalty by staying with us and all you can do is boo him? Oh, hell no. Loyal2 isn't taking that one lying down.

I haven't always been so vocal
It's getting so bad that my Dad's started saying things to fans (which he's really not supposed to do).

Ashamed to admit
However, I'm not all that rational about Sweeney. He's always was the favorite of the turn of the century Royals (although I still would love to see Dye patrolling right, and they could have gotten that done), and follows only Brett (closely) in my favorite all-time players. I think he would be relatively affordable. His bat is coming around this year (thanks, Buddy, for only half a spring training), and I think he's got enough pop left to justify keeping him on for at least another year and keep letting the Billy Butler Experience mature in left. Plus, at a lower salary (think around 4 mil for next year), if he winds up getting injured, its not that big a deal (look at how much John Bale will make this year without ever throwing a pitch)--you get his bat for as long as you can get it.
Finally, if anyone deserves the chance to finish his career in KC, its Sweeney. Even Brett has said he doesn't know if he'd have stayed in KC had the team been this bad when he was on it. Sweeney got paid well, but not as well as he could have elsewhere, and basically gave up ever winning to be the one guy who would stick. That deserves some consideration.

I am fully on the Sweeney fan train
As for Butler, I think he deserves some time out in the field. You can't sit a guy on the bench at 21 and tell him he's your DH from here until eternity. He's too young to play a DH-only role. Yes, his fielding may not be rock solid, but tell me: how many of us were expecting it to be? I can guarantee that Moore knew it wouldn't be pulling him up here; but his offense should make up for that lack for now. They're starting to work on his first base mechanics (though I'll let you all debate that later) and maybe by this time next year he will be our solution to first base. Or Shealy will get better. I honestly don't know what to expect.

Boo Birds
Very well said. I agree with you completely.
But my question is this: does your criticism of this "constant drone of insults," etc. apply to comments by posters on Royalsreview.com? Because, while these comments are not made in the presence of the team, we do have more than our share of unrelentingly negative comments here.

Plus, leading the AL in outfield assists after 5 weeks of playing RF in his career? Simply awesome.
