Game 35 Open Thread- A's (16-16) at Royals (11-23)

After a thrilling 3-2 victory on Wednesday night, the last thing anyone wants is to see the Royals turn around and lose this afternoon, dropping another series' rubber game and falling just a little further under .500.

With last night's game-winning home run in the bottom of the 8th, Mike Sweeney moves into second place in team history, all by his lonesome at 194. Goodbye Amos Otis! Still, that wasn't even enough to make him the Boyfriend of the Day.

Hat tip to Meche, Riske (I know), Gobble and Soria on a game well-pitched. Meche turned in whats becoming his typical game: the inevitable unearned run, tons of pitches thrown, but clean innings. Last night featured a little more walks, and a little fewer singles. As to be expected given the competition I suppose.

Today its the return of Luke Hudson, an Andy Sisco Award candidate and sometime staff "ace" during last season's run to glory.

How many errors today?
Jack Cust in right field, Sweeney at 1B, Vlademil in LF, German at 3B - this could become a comedy of errors.

Hudson and Larue are friends
from their Cincy days. I don't know if that has anything to do with it, but it may have been Luke's call.

Disagree
The team's already mentally checked out of this one.  Perfect game to use Welly's arm for a few innings.

Do you think Buck was just exhausted from
playing 1 game this week?

As for Hudson, I forgot:  was he on the DL for gopheritis?

I have to get ready for work. Gotta bring that bacon home for royalmama and royalbabies. Later fellas.

I know the game's pretty much over
But shouldn't Buddy at least be trying to win?  Hudson's walked everybody.

Just got back from lunch
This sucks. Glad we bumped Zack and Bannister for this. Elarton should be even better.

Wellemyer
If we don't demote him or release him after this game, I will seriously question Dayton's judgment.

Okay, so I have to say I'm not too bummed out
about the loss today. I do have Blanton pitching for my fantasy team today and my fantasy team is the Royals' doppleganger in that they both suck so hard.
So I could use the win even if the Royals can too.

by balto on May 10, 2007 3:25 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Add: How do we not have Jeff Weaver on our staff?
I mean, there are few pitchers in the league that suck more and yet somehow he's not on OUR roster. That's ridiculous. Moore, get on the phone and get Weaver on a plane to KC, no matter what it takes.

Seriously tho, THAT GUY SUCKS.

Great idea
We could use Sidney Ponson, Josh Fogg and Odalis Perez too.

Oh wait, we already have Odalis.

Good news?
And I'm sorry for calling this good news, but  LaRue left the game with an injury.  If it's serious, Buddy Bell will actually be forced to play Buck.  And that is good news.

by CentralChamps2009 on May 10, 2007 3:41 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

If you take out Todd Wellemeyer
Our pitching staff has a 4.15 ERA, and that includes today's game.

It's official I hate Emil Brown.
He doesn't do sh*t all season and then when the game is all but over he gets a hit to score the runners when my fantasy pitcher is throwing. F you Emil, you donkey.

this game reminds me
of the last Royals - A's game I attended.

That was a 21-3 beatdown of the Royals in June 2000.

Surely this pitching staff can top that by the end of today's game.

3-4 years ago
I went to a game just like this. It was a Thursday afternoon game, it was Kids Day at the K, it was the A's, and it was a blow out. I remember Durazo had a couple of blasts.

Hello...from St. Cloud...
My wife said she would post this immediately... I hope.

Hey we finally scored some runs... its only 12-3 now.

Huddy looked like he was rushed back just a LITTLE  to quickly. 50 pitches in two innings.  Four walks and one homerun with no K's.  And he was better prepared than Elarton.  Who is making the decisions up there????

Why is Wellemeyer still on the roster.  Couldn't we bring Easy Eddie Yarnall back and give him a try or Giron.

Okay it is now 16-3 and this is a laugher.  We can't hit and we can't get anyone out.  We suck...

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.....silently of course.  I wouldn't want to show these overpaid prima donna's that I think they suck out there on the field.  I mean that only in the nicest way possible.

I will be back on Monday and I hope GMDM has done something by then.  Or we could just be alot closer to 1/3 of the way to 100 losses.

I can hear my wife laughing from here.  Crap!!!!!

Also LaRueTheDay is lucky he got hurt
3 more ABs and he's below .100 again.

Isn't it odd that the two worst players Shealy and LaRue got hurt?

You going to see them down in Anaheim?
Every year I do it, but I think this year I'll pass on the ritualistic hazing that comes with wearing a Royals jersey to a beat down.

ah no here in oakland
but the hazing is the same.

Touchdown Oakland.
And with a fourteen point lead deep in the fourth quarter, Oakland looks to salt this one away.

by mazoboom on May 10, 2007 4:58 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Just contract this f*cking team.
With Buddy Bell and the rest of the morons upstairs running every significant prospect into the ground, what's the point?

How in the bloody F*CK does having Greinke pitch in a blowout loss where Oakland is clearly "ON" helping him develop?

What GOOD could possibly come of it? He gets a couple people out and thinks to himself, "I guess this is my worth, I'm a junk pitcher they throw in when the ship is sinking."

I swear this team is run by the biggest group of idiots ever assembled. I thought I didn't care anymore that I was apathetic but watching them systematically destroy prospect after prospect after prospect with no accountability. It's just too much.

Hey, can we change the rules?
So that only innings 1, 3, and 6 count?

by mazoboom on May 10, 2007 4:59 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Is Bell just thinking "Hey I wonder if I can
use everybody?" I'm sure Grienke could take another inning.

Hooray for Ducky! The only the Royal that tried!
He gave us a THIRD memorable shutout inning.  Innings 1, 3, and 9. I'll always remember you.  I guess you can tag along, inning 6.
