Game 39 Open Thread- Royals (12-26) at A's(19-17)

After rebounding with an impressive showing of Royal Pride on Sunday afternoon at the Cell, the Royals look to maintain their excellence as they open up a four game set in Oakland.

Didn't the Royals just play Oakland? Yes. Didn't Meche just matchup against Dan Haren (3-2, 1.89 ERA) last week? Yes. All a part of the unbalanced/interleague schedule I suppose.

Meche continues to be the story this spring, especially from a national perspective, and for good reason. After last week's no decision (in a game the Royals eventually won) against Oakland, Mechey lowered his ERA to 2.15. While the ERA is aided in part by 7 unearned runs which don't appear on the slate, thanks to great control (14 walks in 54.1 innings) and some good luck on the timing of home runs, Meche currently owns one of the shiniest baseball card stat lines in the American League. Nevertheless, I think for many hardcore Royals fans, the emergence of Jorge de la Rosa as a potentially useful American League pitcher is the bigger development. Without actually developing/finding a low-cost pitching asset or four, the varying degrees to which the team "wins" the Meche signing will remain mostly irrelevant.

Thanks to Sunday's win, the Royals remain 12 games out in the AL Central, but only 6.5 games behind fourth place Minnesota.

Of course, the event on everyone's mind is the somewhat questionable (ok, lets just say "borderline pointless") recall of A----- B-----. Jalepena and A---- should form one of the most impotent SS combos in the league!

-----

Postscript: Sorry everyone about lack of posts... I've been a bit all over the place since the weekend, and the internet time and quality has been spotty.-RR

I hate that Berroa is coming back up
I am trying to make some sense of his recall that will let me accept it as logical and helpful to the team.  Maybe, just maybe, they are showcasing him for a trade?  Maybe Berroa is the victim of an elaborate episode of "punked?"  He'll arrive and no one will open the clubhouse door.

If Berroa is really coming up to assume a place on the team long term again, I'll be unreasonably disappointed in Dayton Moore.  In no way has Berroa proved he has remade himself.  The bastard only has four walks in five weeks of AAA play.  He has an OBP of ~.330 in Omaha.

Bringing Berroa back up sends the message to him, and to everyone else in the organization, that he is doing "just fine."

I don't think we have to worry unless Gordo goes
When Shealy and/or Gload get back Berroa will be gone, unless they decide Gordo needs some AAA time.

BELL MUST BE FIRED!
Not only is Butler not in LF, he's not in the line-up at all.  This makes 2 straight games and 4 straight that he hasn't played the field.  I've had it!!!!!!!!

by Stook on May 14, 2007 9:25 PM EDT reply actions

He needs to be in Omaha
Buddy and DM share the blame on this one, I blame DM more for desperately bringing him up for the long homestand to generate fan interest. I don't want him in LF. It does get German in the lineup, which everyone is crying for, and he's very hot. Butler should be playing 1B for Omaha tonight DM!

This roster is insane!

by chukar on May 14, 2007 9:33 PM EDT up reply actions

By the way, if Butler and German both play
can't German play 1B? Isn't that much less of a risk? Damn Buddy!

But perhaps
...not tonight...ugh

by howserfan on May 14, 2007 10:17 PM EDT up reply actions

If he's here
He should be playing.  Nuff said.  I'll leave the roster decisions to GMDM.  He's one of the best bats we have and HAS to be in the line-up.  But NOOOO..Buddy has to have his Lefty-Righty-Lefty-Righty-Lefty-Righty line-up in there.  Hey Buddy..WE SUCK..JUST GET YOUR BEST F-ING BATS IN THE LINE-UP ANY WAY YOU CAN!!!

German getting playing time has nothing to do with Butler.  One's an OF and one is an IF.

I hate this..I really hate this.

by Stook on May 14, 2007 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Hilarious
In listing where Berroa might play, Buddy included first base! Wow, we definitiely have more depth at first than any team in MLB. May as well get Blanco some time there too.

by chukar on May 14, 2007 9:41 PM EDT reply actions

lol..Good one.
Hey..we just traded Graham Koonce to the Braves.  We now have a hole at 1st in AAA.

by Stook on May 14, 2007 9:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Damn Stook you're right
Gordo's only contribution lately has been play at third, he was awesome in Chicago, and now we're putting him at first to get our worst infielder at third. German is a joke at third.

I'd sit Grudz while German is hot, Gordo at third, Butler DH, Sweeney at first.

by chukar on May 14, 2007 9:49 PM EDT reply actions

Another thing
Gordo hitting ahead of Buck again, increasing the chance Gordo is up when we really need to at least put it in play. And crap, Grudz hitting 2nd and German 6th? Wouldn't you flip those?

by chukar on May 14, 2007 9:58 PM EDT reply actions

by howserfan on May 14, 2007 10:15 PM EDT reply actions

Butler should be in the lineup today
He's getting the Huber treatment, it's not a good thing.

I appreciate the German play time, but why can't we do this: Gordon at 3rd, Butler at 1st, Sweeney DH, German in LF. Or if you must put German at 3rd, then put Butler back out in LF. After one error, everyone goes fucking balistic. Ridiculous.

by PhantomRoyals on May 14, 2007 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Fine question
I'll take a crack at it.

Bob Davis is one of the broadcasters for the Royals' properties.  Typically, he has toiled on RSTN [Royals Sports Television Network---a creation made necessary by Fox Sports' refusal to give the Royals a cable contract], but this year he has done a number of games on the radio network with the delightful Ryan Lefebvre sliding over to the TV booth.

Now, why do we hate Bob Davis?  Well, imagine that Pat Summerall hadn't been shunted aside by the networks.  Now imagine he was doing baseball, a sport about which he didn't know very much.  Now imagine all the booze had killed just a few too many synapses.

Well, then you'd still have somebody better than Bob Davis...hey, it's Pat Freakin' Summerall!

Anyway, he's just a bad announcer.  Verbose, thick and goofy.  My personal favorite:  getting the count wrong whenever the chyron is slow.  It's like he's not even at the game, just watching on TV with us...

I know, I know, Buddy.  "Statistics" and "averages" are a vodoo science.  Buddy would probably be shocked (SHOCKED I TELL YOU) to find out the Royals are 12-26.  I mean..who looks are records anyway..they're just numbers.  They don't mean anything.

I hope it happens. Because if nothing else, it'll cost Buddy his job.

I think Meche has gone over 100 pitches
in all his starts.  I don't think Buddy worries about his count until it breaks 110.

There was some criticism of this on the radio a fews weeks ago.  I don't know who was talking, but he said that the Royals should go easier on Meche this year so he doesn't wear out his arm in a lost season.  You know, conserve him for the bright future that is always one more season away.

probably some kinda minor proof

by Freneau on May 15, 2007 12:12 AM EDT up reply actions

Funny, there we were drawing opposite
conclusions about Sweeney and the juice, and it was not even the subject of the original comment.

I don't know if Sweeney was a user, but if I were to ballpark his odds I'd go about 65% that he was a chemical boy.

by James Quinn on May 15, 2007 12:17 AM EDT up reply actions

I suspect he was a user
that would explain his cartledge problems, his injuries, his rapidly decreased bat speed, his slow recovery from injuries.  He might have been a user and gotten off the juice about two years ago.

by James Quinn on May 15, 2007 12:13 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm not so sure
Sweeney's main problems were with his back, not a typical juicing injury (knees, hips, freakish kidney and thyroid problems a la Brady Anderson and Giambi).  I think Sweeney's violent swing and body type had a lot to do with it.

by nycroyal on May 15, 2007 12:17 AM EDT up reply actions

I think his back problems were due to
cartledge degeneration?  If that is true than it is consistant with steroid use.  It is the same thing that happens to the knees.  Guys add a bunch of muscle weight, and the steroids stop cartledge growth while at the same time putting an extra 20-30 lbs of weight on them.  It is what happened to Bonds and Giambi for sure.  And McGuire.  Guy can hardly walk now I understand.

by James Quinn on May 15, 2007 12:20 AM EDT up reply actions

Maybe that is different from the cartlidge thing

Did it ever occur to anyone
that maybe the Royals ripped off Gil Meche? 55M really probably not enough to play for this team.

Teahen's a great outfielder
only 2 E for a position he's never played? And 183 assists?

by mazoboom on May 15, 2007 12:26 AM EDT reply actions

Damn
That was clutch by Gobble.  Just proves, even though Johnson ripped that two out ball, if you throw strikes the seven major leaguers behind you can help you get outs.  Are you listening Ducky?!!!

DOOSHER
He's the guy we got the win off last time!

We only score when Meche is out of the game.

Nasty Royals Cheerleader Lady is in love

Hey Duchscherer, yeah, I'm talking to you.  You must have a thing for me.  This is our second date in a week.  You're my favorite player lately.  All us Royals fans get a smile just thinking about you.  Shame you can't pitch against us every night.

Oh Yes, two in a row....

Hey all, lets not forget Gordos key hit
ahead of Bucky. Kid actually contributed to a win. Maybe a start?

by chukar on May 15, 2007 1:01 AM EDT reply actions

I just noticed the title of the open thread
"Royals (12-26) at Royals (19-17)"

Maybe that's why nobody could score any runs.

Costa
0-4 with 3k

seriously, give Emil a chance, if nothing else other than to get some trade value.

Let's go Royals! And Let's go Timmeh!

by playingwithfire on May 15, 2007 1:29 AM EDT reply actions

Emil?
Show some love to Butler. Seriously, am I the only one that thinks this kid can flat-out rake? Why is he up to sit on the bench? Buddyball at its finest.

by royaldaddy on May 15, 2007 1:35 AM EDT up reply actions

No
Send both Butler and Gordon to AAA, tell Butler that he's good enough, but the major league club just needs to work out some roster crunch and that he'll be up as soon as that happens. Seriously, it makes no sense playing Butler on the Bench team.
Let's go Royals! And Let's go Timmeh!
