Game 66 Open Thread- Cardinals (28-34) at Royals (25-41)

The final showdown at the K starts shortly. Can the Royals rebound from Wednesday's horrible showing? Will more than 30,000 Royals fans show up at the game? How many Royals will get injured tonight?

Questions abound. I hope Buddisimo cranked up the Madonna in the locker room today to get the troops fired up.

The Cardinals send Kip Wells (2-10, 6.33 ERA) with the series on the line, while the Royals turn to the Self Appointed Effort Inspector (2-2, 7.34 ERA).

The following fascinates me about Elarton this season:

Stikeouts- 13
Walks- 15
HRs- 10

I never played the game, but I'm pretty sure thats not a good combination of events.

relaxing on my last free night for a long time
The Royals are, not surprisingly, my priority. Everyone's going out to the bar, but I don't really feel like sitting there and not drinking and not being the designated driver (the vans are rental, so I have to be 23 to drive). I should probably be more social, but...well, there's always time tomorrow for that.

Before, he was trying to kill and drive everything. Now, he's settling down and realizes that a single can be useful. He'll be just fine. He has a great swing, just needs a few minor modifications.

for all of the dumb crap allard did, why the heck did he have to sign elarton to a 2 YEAR DEAL?!?!?!?!?!?

scarier thought...

elaraton was considered our "#1 starter" last season...

yet another example of how improved this team is under GMDM, talent wise elarton is probably somewhere around #28 on the list of starting pitchers now somewhere between dewon brazelton (hes gone, right? cause otherwise he is WAY ahead of scotty) and buddy himself...

get Meche 2-3 runs, but we give this shitbag like 10. WTF?

by royaldaddy on Jun 14, 2007 9:03 PM EDT up reply actions

what a silly question...
why its because elarton is the self appointed team effort inspector, but he tends to take days off when mechey pitches. you see, he was signed by allard baird to be the 'ace' and as soon as gil meche signed the dotted line on the 5 year some-odd amount dollar contract (the monetary value always gets me, i never seem to remember it) he got pissed off and began a grudge. so, while he gets on the offense between innings for not scoring (with an increased...how do i say this...volume...when he is the one on the hill, however short it is) when meche is on the hill he chooses to sit back and not say anything. this is why we see crazy pitchers like jon lieber 3 hit us with 11 k's, its because of a silly grudge over who is truly staff ace.

From tomorrow's AP wire
Let's hope.

"The Kansas City Royals today designated starting pitcher Scott Elarton for assignment. The veteran right-hander struggled again Thursday night, lasting only two innings against St. Louis.

He will have twenty-four hours to clear waivers during which any major league team may claim him if they are willing to assume the remaining pro-rated portion of his 2007 salary.

If he is not claimed, he may refuse the assigment to AAA Omaha which would make him a free agent, voiding his existing deal.

The Royals have not announced who will take Elarton's spot in the rotation but speculation centers on Rule V acquisition Joakim Soria and fomer first-round selection Zack Greinke with Omaha left-hander Tyler Lumsden a dark horse possibility."

tpj update: .274 average and .655 ops
that ops still isnt very good at all but i think that pena is really improving as a hitter. i know im beating a dead horse with all of this pro-pena talk but that trade could turn out to be yet another where GMDM came out ahead. i mean, he is 4 for 4 tonite...

hopefully he will develop more gap-to-gap power as he continues to progress as a hitter, but even if he slugs ~680 and can hit ~280 and play the same caliber of defense he has a spot as my starting ss...

If TPJ can combine his defense with even a reasonable OBP he'll be a very valuable SS.

i agree with blue eyes
lets give gathright the rest of the year to see if the newfound plate discipline is for real and if it stays, lets shop ddj. i was opposed to this a couple of weeks ago but if gathright really emerges then we could pick up a young promising pitcher and probably a young promising 2b too for ddj. or a power hitting lfer type. we have enough high average guys, it would be nice to have a masher who only hits .240 but also hits 30 HR's. if we could get a young guy like that for ddj then i would be very happy. this is way too long......

and regarding pena, it would be HUGE if we wouldnt have to worry about the ss position with bianchi given plenty of time to develop as a ss, if he stays there. PLUS, we could then even afford to move moustakas to lf/1b/dh and still have a good lineup...

by rockchalk on Jun 14, 2007 10:45 PM EDT reply actions

I've been saying to shop DDJ since the
start of the year. He's a little overrated. We could get a bounty for him. He's one of our most coveted pieces. a 2B and solid pitcher wouldn't be ridiculous to wish for.

by BlueEyesAustin on Jun 14, 2007 10:47 PM EDT reply actions

It will be interesting to see . . .
who's hitting develops more, Gordon or Pena?
Remember, Pena didn't grow up playing ball, so he might still have a lot of hitting to learn.

But, his ceiling still might not be high enough for us. Maybe he'll be the utility infielder and we can shop German or slot him at second.

by Eppenweb on Jun 14, 2007 10:48 PM EDT reply actions

i disagree
if he hits 275ish (like he is now) and plays the stellar defense he is playing right now that is good enough for my #9 hitter and ss. i think he will improve upon that to hit around the same (maybe even drop a tad to like 270ish) but also develop gap-to-gap power rasiing his ops to 730ish. hit like 2 or 3 home runs  year. if he does that AND learns to take more walks then he IS our long term answer. thats a lot to ask, i am just expecting a slight increase in gap to gap power...

DDJ/Gatt/Teahen
Instead of Brown/DDJ/Teahen is okay by me.  Brown does produce the occasional power or RBIs, but Gatt gives us speed and plate discipline.  We have several guys who can be regular RBI guys with occasional power (Teahen, DDJ, Buck, Sweeney), but precious few who give us Gatt's skill set.

Just wanted to note
that down here in Springfield we have had to endure three straight nights of Cardinals telecasts.  According to Al Hrabosky, we have not had a winning record in 13-14 years, the Royals GM is DRAYTON Moore and Gil Meche has struggled this year.

Knobs.  Knobby knobs.

If I hear one more verbal lick of the balls for Albert Pujols, I will personally take a dump on Fredbird.  And he will like it.

Silly question
I really should no this, but for a few years now, I've seen people using lines like  "Don't mess with DeJesus."

What's the original reference?

Dunno
"Don't mess with Texas" maybe?

Although, he's from New Jersey.

How about, "DeJesus.  You got a problem with that?"

Watch "The Big Lebowski"
and the bowling scene. It's all right there, man. Enjoy it with a cold sasparilla.

The story writes itself...
at the July 9th Springfield Cardinals game, Cardinals fans will try to break the world record for people wearing Groucho Marx glasses.  After witnessing the beatdown by the Boys in Blue this week, I am sure they will take any disguise they can get.

Meche
cant catch a break, tommorows marlin starter Mitre, 1.59 era, "Mitre has not allowed an earned run in 22 2/3 innings. He has surrendered 18 hits and two walks while striking out 21 in that span. He's 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA in five road starts this season."

Damn, we gotta get him some runs

We Won, We won, We won....
I just stumbled back from the neighbors and it is soooooo... good to watch the Royals win on a big screen TV.   I guess the beam wasn't working tonight for Scotty.  But, the bench and the bats looked good.  I hope this is a harbinger of good things to come for the Blue.

Great win, Great night, Great fun... time to hit the sack... Say goodnight Gracie....

What do you guys think?
Just a series win over an inferior opponent for the Royals?

Bring on the Marlins.  Let's get Meche a well deserved win.

I'm saying Greinke, Gordon, TPJ, Teahen get some love.  It's going to be tough tonight Loyal2.  Good luck up in the Northeast!
