Game 74 Open Thread- Royals (29-44) at Brewers (41-31)

As we eagerly await the resumption of the old Brewers-Royals American League rivalry, the news this afternoon is that the Royals have signed John Thomson to a one-year contract. (Don't call him "Thompson", the Thomsons and the Thompsons don't see eye-to-eye on a lot of things, this goes back to the sixteenth century, when the Thompses sided with the Holy Roman Empire, while the Thoms aligned themselves with the Hapsburgs.) Perhaps most importantly, something about the Thomson signing pushed the heretofore mysterious and straight-laced annoymous writer behind the team's official front office blog over the edge:

Here's the background on Thomson: He's 33 and a nine-year Major League veteran, compiling a 62-84 record and a 4.69 ERA in 214 career games, including 210 starts. After originally being selected by Colorado in the seventh round of the 1993 draft, he pitched for the Rockies (1997-2002), Mets (2002), Rangers (2003) and - get ready for this! - the Braves (2004-2006). His best season came in 2004 with Atlanta, when he went 14-8 with a 3.72 ERA in 33 starts, helping the Braves to the playoffs. His only season in the American League came in 2003 with Texas, when he tied for second in the league in starts (35), finished seventh in innings (217.0) and tied for seventh with three complete games.
It just goes to show that we must always be wary of speculating upon the depths of another man's soul. Who can guess what secret passions might boil beneath the calm surface of things over at Around the Horn in KC.

As for tonight's game, it'll be started -- as you know doubt already know -- by the man who brought Wednesday's classic to an abrupt end with his fifth pitch to Ryan Ludwick in the 14th inning. Interestingly, skipping away from Jorge de la Rosa (4-8, 5.33 ERA) for a second, Buddy Bell cited Royal passivity as the culprit behind the offensive shutdown in extra innings Wednesday night:

"We had an awful approach offensively all night long," said Kansas City manager Buddy Bell, whose club went scoreless over the final eight innings. "This is the big leagues and you've got to be aggressive up there. I'm not sure what we were doing."

What game was he watching?

Perhaps this is just a question of definitions, as "aggressive", especially in the world of jocktalk, can mean just about anything I suppose. Nevertheless, if Bell seems to think that the Royals were passive or overly patient at the plate, then I think he's mistaken.

Cardinal Pitchers in Ex. Innings Wed.

-Izzy: 8 batters faced, 41 total pitches (5.125 P/PA)
-Cate: 6 batters faced, 20 total pitches (3.333 P/PA)
-Wells: 8 batters faced, 30 total pitches (3.75 ERA)

That data for Wells is also including an intentional walk to Mark Teahen. In a 14 inning game started by Todd Wellemeyer, the Royals drew one non-intentional walk and struck out 11 times, so maybe he's trying in his own Buddy-way to complain about strikeouts. Still, I'm not sure what conception of aggressiveness is an answer here.

To return to tonight, the matter at hand is the question of George of the Rose's ability to be a functional major league starter. As Bob Dutton so wonderfully put it, Rosey's on a month-long slide from "reliable starter to ragamuffin". Meanwhile, the Brewers counter with our old league-average, robotically consistent friend Jeff Suppan (7-7, 4.69 ERA).

Incidentally, "ragamuffin" is a very old word. The earliest known usage is by Langland -- "ragomoffyn" actually -- in Piers Plowman back in 1393. While Langland was using the word to describe a demon, as a noun for "a ragged, dirty, disreputable man" ragamuffin shows up as early as 1581. In Dekker and Webster's The Famous History of Sir Thomas Wyatt (1607), we get the line "What set of Villaines are you, you perpetuall Ragamuffins?"

Be us ragamuffins or not, clearly, we'll cherish our memories of tonight's game well into our dotages.

And here I thought
The Thompsons/Thomsons feud dated back only to the Hatfields and McCoys.  And by that, of course, I meant Hatfield Thompson and McCoy Thomson.

all that matters now
is that interleague play is so wonderful, its special to play the brewers

by Freneau on Jun 22, 2007 4:11 PM EDT reply actions

What a rivalry
We all forget what a vicious rivalry the Royals and Brewers have. After all, they were both admitted into the American League as expansion franchises in the same year - 1969. Back then, the Brewers were known as the "Seattle Pilots." The Royals won 69 games that inaugural season, compared to the Pilots 64 wins, so embarrassing the Seattle franchise that they packed up and moved to Milwaukee after just one season.

The rivalry continued from Wisconsin as the Royals and Brewers would hook up numerous times throughout the years. On June 19, 1974, Steve Busby would once again humiliate the Brew Crew by allowing just a George Scott walk in the second in a 2-0 no-hitter, the first in team history.

The Royals franchise ascended quickly, with a winning season as soon as 1973 and a division title by 1976. Meanwhile, the Brewers languished, failing to field a winning team until 1978, when the Royals were winning their third straight division title.

The Brewers finally won the AL Pennant in 1982, their only non-strike year post-season appearance. While Royals fans may lament their 22 year playoff drought, Milwaukeans have had to suffer an amazing 25 year playoff drought. In fact, since their AL Pennant in 1982, the Brewers have had just five winning seasons, and none since  the John Jaha days of 1992.

Maybe i'm slow getting to this and you guys have already been all over this, but there's an article on ESPN now.....

by powderblue on Jun 22, 2007 9:13 PM EDT reply actions

I love that move
If Bradley can get healthy, we may be able to solve our leftfield problem. He's got power, speed, and a decent glove. A for Dayton on this move. You have to take some chances like this.

by royaldaddy on Jun 22, 2007 9:19 PM EDT up reply actions

The best part of the trade
Is subtracting Leo Nunez.

Two years ago I saw the Royals play a couple of games at Jacobs Field.  I was sitting next to fans from Charlotte when Nunez entered with the Royals trailing 4-1 and nobody on base.  I predicted that Nunez would make it 10-1 and before Cleveland was through batting in the seventh, the Royals indeed were down 10-1!

Put it this way, I've been more impressed with Scott Elarton than Leo Nunez!

by jbrocato on Jun 22, 2007 9:22 PM EDT up reply actions

what does this mean?
hopefully this means that LIME is close to being traded.

frankly, ive always LOVED bradley but not quite sure how he fits in with this club, we take on salary and while a very good player i dont see how he helps out the team long term.

the only way this deal could be a good deal for us (that i can see) is if he can spin bradley for more than nunez after 6 weeks of good-to-great play and no off-the-field problems. this does go along with the rest of moore's offseason trades though, giving up "baird guys" who had been rushed to the majors and who moore obviously thought would never be successful in the majors.

remember, moore is from chicago where they seemingly never rush prospects, so when he takes a look and realizes that these guys were rushed he apparently feels the need to trade them away while they still have value. it has worked out so far getting gload and banny for sisco and burgos, and nunez is not as highly regarded as the other two. again, i dont see the point if we cant resign him at the end of the year but im sure he has a plan.

ive learned to trust moore...

by rockchalk on Jun 22, 2007 9:23 PM EDT up reply actions

i guess we -could- resign him
as royaldaddy said, he could be our LF of the future which we have all been clamoring for the past couple of weeks/months. if he doesnt work out, nunez is a "baird guy" like i said and was expendable to moore.

like i said, i LOVE milton and hope he can be successful, have always loved his talent...

on Bradley trade.  Really surprised about this since GMDM has valued 'character' so much in previous acquisitions.  Maybe he knows another GM he can flip Bradley to for something else.

Atlanta hasn't scored in three games...

Asked specifically if character issues led to Bradley's departure, Beane said, "Is Milton a fiery, emotional guy? Absolutely. He's not the first guy to be like that in this game and we don't get to the playoffs (last year) without Milton. As far as speculation, you can speculate all you want. I'm not going to contribute to that in any way. We had to manage our roster and it was time to go a different way.''

Braves just got shut out
for the third game in a row, and only a desperate club who thinks they have a chance at the postseason this year would acquire a powerful switch-hitting headcase playing out a four million dollar option.

I'm calling it now.  Bradley is a Bravo by this time next week and we get some piece back that we evaluate as being better than Nunez.

Note the absence of any team statement on Bradley, not even a perfunctory "we think he can help us."  The dog that didn't bark can be the biggest clue.

More in general than specific to Musser, but
I think I've decided I kind of like the idea of a lefty long relief guy.  It's not real common to see, but I bet it would throw a lot ot teams off guard with a lefty in that role (especially in the NL)

I don't know, the idea might be half-baked.

all is well
we got out of the inning unscathed besides graffs homer...

musser is actually impressing me this go around, i was critical of his recall but he has an ERA of (im pretty sure) ZERO in AAA in like 20 innings. i guess that will always warrant a call up and this time he is actually performing up to standards.

im liking him more and more.

same here.
it is clear dayton is still a big fan. ok, i made this all up right now, but what about this?

i bet GMDM knew about the injury all along. yet he still made the trade to get the word out on his injury. then, no one would be interested and he would have to be released. it is clear GMDM is enamored with milton, if we can sign him to a contract then that is perfect. we give him a month or so to test his oblique and calf, if he hits we will be able to pick up something valuable. if not, then it isnt a big deal and we see if he has a future with this team...

i love that theory.
