Royal draft tomorrow, name your pick

Please list the top 3 guys you want to see the Royals draft in order, from most wanted to lesser wanted.

Me

  1. Matt Wieters
  2. Josh Vitters
  3. Beau Mills
Since I need stupid 300 characters to satisfy the need of RR. What's below will be my venting of today's hockey game.

WTF Ottawa? WTF? WTF? WTF? Scoring in your own net, let in soft grounders, screw up 3 on 2 plays, missed a penalty shot with pathetic effort(I could do that deke, and I'm a goalie by nature, certainly not going to fool a top goalie like Jean Sebastien Giguere).

Venting over, I'm glad that Giguere won the cup finally, I met him on a plane once, VERY VERY nice guy. From all the reports I've read, he's a humble guy too. Not sure how I like Chris Pronger winning it though, the guy needs a stick to the face treatment, but unfortunately McGrattan is not on the playoff roster.

Price, Porcello, Vitters
I'm holding out hope until TB actually makes the pick.

Taking Porcello, offering a minor league contract with a huge signing bonus, and telling him to walk by the new Aug. 15 deadline if he doesn't want it would be, while temporarily frustrating, would be okay for this year with me.  If he didn't take it, my understanding is that we'd get pick 2a (the third pick) next year.  Two picks out of the top 6-7 next year would be okay, especially since nobody's all that hot on the second pick in the draft on down this year.  Getting Porcello to sign would also be "okay".  If my understanding of the new draft rule is correct, what struck me as a big gamble earlier today now strikes me as a calculated gamble, i.e. one worth taking.

A side note:  Jeff Passan at Yahoo! is now projecting Weiters to Milwaukee at pick 7 due to the Boras factor, and has us taking Vitters or Detwiler if we decide not to mess with Boras on Porcello.  I'm good with Vitters--I think this year is showing that we can't have too much offense in the pipeline, either.

BBTN, 3 things
  1. No Royal highlight even though its the Indians and a great game. But extended Yanks/White Sox in blowout, plus Clemens throwing BP video!!!
  2. Steve Berthiuame, Eric Young(very street), Eduardo Perez...my how the mighty have fallen, where are you Harold Reynolds?
  3. But the topper was an Eric Byrnes web gem: after a throw to the plate does a full out completely unnecessary somersault in which he actually lands on his head...drawing great praise from Young...gotta see it to believe it
And on the Royals postgame Bmac saying we should pursue Byrnes...he's been losing lots of street cred lately

One funny moment. Perez on a Pujols homer "there go my man" (that's how EY and EP talk); Berth: Angel Berroa?

EY pisses me off
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think he sent a cheapshot Harold Reynolds way at the end of the show. He said something to the effect of, "It's good to have an athletic secondbaseman on the show now." I am paraphrasing, but it was something like that. Can anyone confirm that for me? Note to EY: You were never that good. Speaking of Eric Byrnes, I really like the way the dude plays and I would love to see that kind of player in Royal blue, but that's just me.

Damn I missed that, already deleted
EB: yea he plays all out and he is putting out good #s this year and last, but he'll be 32; I guess he might be an option since FAs aren't exactly knocking down our door

Byrnes
I would be ecstatic to have him. He plays hard and provides energy. Would give us 25 HR from LF too, not great but pretty good production.

Jarrod Parker
Better stuff that Porcello. Great mechanics.

I want him in our system.

Don't be surprised if it is Vitters
Price will be gone.  Wieters has really failed to impress this season, so I don't think he's worth the HUGE money he is going to demand.  Porcello looks great, but he's a high school pitcher with Boras as his agent and Boras is saying that he is going to require Josh Beckett money (another drafted HS pitcher) adjusted for inflation.  That means a $10 million major league contract.  And we all know that Boras would be more than happy to let the kid not sign and then re-enter the draft next year.  It has worked for his clients very well in the past.

According to everything I've read, that leaves Vitters.  Unfortunately, he's a HS player, but he's the top position player on every list I've seen.  He's an impact bat and that is hard to turn down when the pitching options aren't very appealing.  Yes, he's a 3B.  And if the Royals draft him, I'm sure there will be all kinds of uproar about "how could the Royals draft a 3B???"  But you never, ever draft for need with a top 10 pick.  He'll take 3-4 years to develop and by then he could be a 2B or an OF or whatever the Royals want him to be (within limits) and who knows what the major league's team needs will be by then.

If Ladnier picks Vitters, I'm kind of going to have to trust him on that.  He's done well with first round HS position players before (See Billy Butler).

My picks
  1. David Price
  2. Matt Wieters
  3. Rick Porcello
They are the top three players available. I'm always suspicious of guys who days before the draft, start skyrocketing up everyone's charts. Vitters would be fourth on my list.

How bout what Dayton thinks
From the Star:

"We're going to select a player," general manager Dayton Moore said, "who has a realistic view of his value. We're going to get a player who will make a major impact on our ballclub for a long time."  That means no Porcello and no Weiters.

Star says it's gonna be a high school player (unless the miracle of Price happens), and it's likely gonna be Vitters, with Moustakas (Boras factor), Parker, or catcher Devin Mesoraco (who, to be honest, I haven't heard of until now) as other options.

Ridiciulous
I have a hard time understanding why the Royals are balking so much at Scott Boras' pay demands. Let me get this straight - they just spent $55 million on a guy that produced the numbers of a #4 starter, hoping he would turn into a #1 starter like Jason Schmidt or Chris Carptenter. But they won't spend the $2-4 million extra it would take to land Matt Wieters or Rick Porcello. Huh?

Major risk diference there
First, the Royals invested the amount of money in Meche that would make it a good deal if he turned out to be a #3 starter, not an ace.  Considering salary inflation, a good #3 starter for that amount of money is good value (not like their opinion is the last word on the subject, but guys like Rob & Rany back me up on this one).

Second, Meche had multiple seasons of major league experience for scouts to judge him on.  They had much better information on which to guage his potential over the next 5 years than anyone does for any high school pitcher who has never even faced a minor league batter, much less major league batters.

And we're not talking about an extra $2-4 million for Porcello.  Boras has said that Porcello is going to demand Josh Beckett money, adjusted for inflation.  That means approximately $9-11 million in a guaranteed major league contract.  Vitters, on the other hand will be more like a $3-4 million signing bonus and no majore league contract.  That is a huge difference.

Wieters isn't good enough for that much money and Porcello is too much of a risk.

New MLB.com projection
Fully demonstrates the "Boras Effect"--it has Weiters falling to 10 and Porcello falling all the way to the Yanks at 30.

With the new August deadline, Boras is going to start costing newbies some money.  But on the positive side, the Fort Worth Cats are gonna be loaded.

by CentralChamps2009 on Jun 7, 2007 10:31 AM EDT reply actions

Not so fast
The new signing deadline might actually make the Ft Worth strategy irrelevant as the new deadline happens before the start of the school year. In the past players like Hochevar would stay out of classes because it meant that they could continue to negotiate. Now they won't be able to continue negotating so they might as well go back to school. College juniors go back to the school they have attended thus far. High school kids can either go to a junior college and be back in the draft next year or go to a good D1 school and see if they can turn into an elite prospect in 3 years.

Wieters and Porcello wouldn't be good choices
Wieters has shown this season that he isn't worth the kind of money he (Boras) has been saying he will demand.  He just isn't good enough for that money, and that is why he is falling on every mock draft board.  I don't think he'll go in the top 5.

Porcello looks great, but Boras is looking for a huge major league contract for this kid.  Prospects are always risking.  Pitching prospects doubly risky.  HS pitching prospects triply risky.  Does it make sense to risk that much money on such a risky pick?

The best position player prospect, Vitters, makes more sense to me.

by Scott McKinney on Jun 7, 2007 11:38 AM EDT reply actions

Wieters
Why do you think he has shown he doesn't deserve that kind of money? His numbers look pretty good to me.

Wieters
Going into the college season, he was just about everybody's #2 draft prospect.  But everything I've read throughout the season up to today has said that he has disappointed.  I think his prolonged early season slump has taken some of the shine off of the apple.  He's still a good prospect, but I don't think he's top 5 anymore, and definitely not worth the money Boras will be asking.
