MLB Draft and Royals-Indians Open Thread

The Royals have drafted Mike Moustakas with the 2nd overall pick.

Sickels on Moustakas here.
Another random profile of Mike, here. LA Times Profile, here.

---------

A flurry of activity awaits the Royals this afternoon, as they finish up a three-game series in Cleveland beginning at 11:05, followed by the televised first round of the Draft at 12:00 1:00.

Be here or be nowhere.

--------

In Cleveland its Odalis Perez (3-5, 5.74 ERA) against Fausto Carmona (6-1, 3.29 ERA). With the mercurial Perez against the conflicted scientist who made a deal with the Devil, it should be a matchup for the ages. One we'll cherish for all time. With a win, the Royals sneak out of Cleveland with a series victory.

-------

A Festival of Draft Links

-Bob Dutton reported yesterday that the Royals are avoiding Scott Boras, and will choose between Josh Vitters, Matt Moustakas, Jarrod Parker, and Devin Mesoraco.

-John Sickels ranks the top pitchers and hitters on the board.

-Jim Callis of Baseball America projects the Royals will take Vitters. (Hat Tip Royals Retro)

-Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus predicts the same.

-Rich Lederer and the Baseball Analysts discuss Josh Vitters here.

-Royal Expos Fan's prediction/preference Diary on the Draft.

-Jerry Crasnick chimes in with the obligatory story about late-round stars.

-Chris Constancio presents his study of High School Pitchers. Good read.

Hey RR
were you wearing a brown jacket and black shirt? Saw a random Royals white guy behind first in the 9th last night.

by chukar on Jun 7, 2007 11:38 AM EDT   0 recs

You looked very concerned
about the Sizemore walk, but I also saw a quiet confidence that Buddy was in complete command...  you were on for a good 10 seconds as they flashed to the fan shot behind Grady at first.

Great TV that 9th, you could see Buddy mouth to Dotel, "what do you wanna do". I love the drama of those manager non-pitching-change mound visits in the 9th, and the requisite show of confidence in the closer.

by chukar on Jun 7, 2007 11:58 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I was concerned, although supportive of the walk
were you watching the Royal-feed?

I may try to buy it

by royalsreview on Jun 7, 2007 12:11 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Damn RR, I'm so pissed
I had the Cleveland STO feed on tivo, but I deleted the file last night to make room for the draft today. Crap, would've gladly sent you a copy.

Cool with Tivo, I was able to freeze the shot and get a good look at your handsome mug and that Rawlings. It was comforting to see a Royals supporter in that sea of raging tribe fans at a high stress moment like that. Love how the electronic media shrinks the world!

yea, def me
I had a glove, as my date and I were both fearful of being killed by a foul ball

All signs point to Vitters
I wish there was a more obvious good choice, but I think it is Vitters.  Drafting a HS pitcher always worries me.  And the kind of unprecedented huge major league contract Boras will be demanding makes it huge money for the riskiest kind of prospect there is.  That doesn't seem to make sense for any team with limited revenues.

by NYRoyal on Jun 7, 2007 12:02 PM EDT   0 recs

The more I read the better I feel about it
man the Boras guys are plummeting, nice to kill the Cub fan hopes for Vitters

Cocaine era
Amazing that I interpreted that statement to mean something completely different.

I assumed it meant the entire Royals front office, management, and scouting were collectively snorting cocaine almost 24/7 since the early '90s.

Of course, I wasn't alive in the 1980's...well, technically I was, but I didn't participate in the horrendous pop culture (and drugs) of the era.  Not that this era's pop culture (and drugs, just kidding) are that much better.

OK, I'm rambling.

I want Wieters
Chukar has convinced me. I've thought about it for 3 days. I want Wieters.

by royaldaddy on Jun 7, 2007 12:06 PM EDT   0 recs

Shit RD, see above, I'm down with
Vitters now due to signability, but I'd still go weiters if not for Boras

by chukar on Jun 7, 2007 12:09 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

He may be worth an MLB contract though
I wouldn't mess with Porcello and an MLB contract, but that Wieters kid is a switch hitting catcher. He's a rare breed, a very valuable tool.

by royaldaddy on Jun 7, 2007 12:12 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

No doubt, but apparently the money is stupid
I was gonna be pissed if we were just being cheap, but if other orgs are passing due to cash I'm ok.

by chukar on Jun 7, 2007 12:21 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Should I remind you that Lala is a
switch hitting catcher.  Vitters all the way....

by grudz69 on Jun 7, 2007 1:10 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I'm with you
Wieters all the way. Vitters would be my second choice. Anything else and I think I would be disappointed. (I'm assuming Porcello is not an option at this point)

German at third
Why God? Why? Give Dejesus some rest at DH, Gathright to center and German to left. Why is it that damn hard? I guess that leaves Gordo to play third, but whatever.

When is our 2nd pick?
what is the Royals gameplan for the rest of the draft?

Odalis not seeming
too sharp today.

Royals also seem to be getting some good whacks off of Fausto.  However, Cleveland is a lot more capable of taking advantage.

If we're lucky, this one will be settled by the bullpens.

Can someone tell me why the utility man
can't play first base? Why not let Gordon stick with 3rd. Did Glass refuse to buy the extra glove or something?

Also: what are the odds that Gordon does nothing but hit 1 double a game for the rest of the season?

by devil_fingers on Jun 7, 2007 12:42 PM EDT   0 recs

1 double a game and
add a reasonable walk rate, I'd take it

Royals taking Moustakas now?
BA draft blog

Jim Callis, on his way to a Chicagoland studio to participate in ESPN's draft coverage, reports the Royals appear to have settled on Mike Moustakas with the No. 2 overall pick. That would slide Josh Vitters to the Cubs at No. 3. The Royals looked like they were on Vitters at 2 last night, but they now have changed their minds. Indiana prep righty Jarrod Parker is the odd man out in this scenario, dropping from the Cubs at 3, probably to the Diamondbacks at 9 or Giants at 10. He won't get past the Marlins at 12.
This leaves the Orioles as the biggest question mark in the first five picks. Stay tuned.

by royaldaddy on Jun 7, 2007 12:59 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

If they think they could turn him into
a secondbaseman, go for it. We need a 2B. Problem is, he's a high school kid (a few years away)

by royaldaddy on Jun 7, 2007 1:04 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I was thinking that
but Chukar convinced me that Wieters would be our best play. But, I guess he's wanting massive money

by royaldaddy on Jun 7, 2007 1:02 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I think I'd prefer Vitters
High school pitchers seem to be such crapshoots.

I just wish the Royals could have avoided sweeping the Tigers at season's end. Seems like Price might have been a better prize than the bottle of champagne we got from Torii Hunter.
