Game 97 Open Thread- Royals (42-54) at Tigers (58-37)

The Royals turn to Brian Bannister (5-6, 3.87 ERA) as they try to claim a second straight series victory on the road. After an impressive June, Bannister's taken a step back in July, posting a 5.54 ERA in two starts. After allowing just four homers in his first twelve starts, Banny's surrendered three long balls in his last two outings.

The Tigers send Nate Robertson (6-6, 4.53 ERA) to the mound, making his 400th career start as a Tiger and his 100th against the Royals. OK, its only his ninth career start against the Royals, yet it seems like the Wichita State attendee has been around forever.

As for the lineup, many are predicting a variation of the "Sunday Scrubs" attack from Bell, with a Jason LaRue start a dead certainty according to an angry "HarveyKen". Still, Bell's hard to predict -- either a lack of systematic thinking or genuine intellectual flexibility I suppose-- and just when you think you've got him figured out, he surprises you. Nevertheless, the burying of Buck is becoming a daily issue, as we're now on month two of Buck and LaRue essentially splitting time equally. In "HarveyKen"'s diary I mentioned the superficial playing time numbers:

Buck: 233 PAs, 63 Games, 541 Innings

LaRue: 120 PAs, 40 Games, 295 Innings

Phillips: 11 PAs, 5 Games, 24 Innings

Buck leads the team in slugging at .541 if you don't take Reggie Sanders' handful of PAs into account, and no one else amongst the regulars is really even close. Yet Buck has only appeared as a pinch-hitter twice, and only DHed... well, he's never DHed. When someone's behind Joe Torre in tactical matters, you know its gotten bad: Bell should look at Torre's handling of Posada the last few years, especially his willingness to frequently give him half-games off, PHing him late in close games while also giving him regular turns at DH. (2007 numbers for Posada: 1 game at first, 3 games as DH, 11 games as a PH)

The bottom line is that this lineup needs more, not less, John Buck.

The lineup issue...
There seems to be two sides:

1)Bell is goofy for not using set lineups

2)People are goofy for insisting on set lineups.

Personally, I think it's probably somewhere in the middle.  I don't think a set lineup is a necessary thing, but it is extremely silly to not put your best hitters in the top three spots.  The logic is simple and is as follows: Batting earlier in the lineup with consistancy means that one will have more plate appearances.  Having one's best hitters getting more plate appearances over the season is a good thing.  Ergo, there is every reason to put one's best hitters early in the lineups.

The other side of this is that, statistically speaking, there isn't an appreciable advantage to having an "optimal" lineup.  It's pretty negligable actually.  However, I think the problem is that this analysis is based on a game by game scenario...whereas over the whole season, it only makes sense to give more plate appearances to someone who will do something with them.  For a team like the Royals, it is especially important...because there is a marked difference between our good and not so good hitters.

I have recently wondered if there might be some advantage to putting Gordon up higher.  This would not be consistant with the earlier logic...but I wonder if giving players who are still learning the game at the MLB level might benefit with more plate appearances...just a thought.

Umm, yeah.  So, I guess that I like having a set lineup (because I like good hitters to hit early and gain more plate appearances), but I understand that the opposing view has a good point (in that, a set lineup doesn't really help give hitters confidence or whatever and that it doesn't really have a big influence game by game)

Okay, I'll bite... 3-2 Royals...
I agree with you RR.  Buddo needs to loosen up a bit when it comes to his handling of Buck.  But, he won't because Buck is a "catcher" and in that fact is doomed to platoon with Lala (.173).

just curious, can German play 1B?
I know there's questions about his fielding ability, so it seems like we'd be better off keeping Teahen and Gordon in the 3B spot instead of German.

by marbotty on Jul 22, 2007 1:31 PM EDT reply actions

I've Asked That
Before, too. German isn't very tall, so maybe they think he's not a big enough target. I also asked why, If Bell is determined to have a no-hit defensive catcher, is afraid of the wear on Buck behind the plate, and we're grasping at straws (Shealy) to man 1st base, why has Buck not been tried there.

I'm sure there's more I don't know than I do, just wondering.

My impression...
I wondered this myself the other day...I thought it would make sense that you'd put him at 1B and let either Gordon or Teahen play 3B since they are better defenders.

I think this is probably a case of Buddy following the CW.  German is only 5'9" and CW dictates that one should have a large target at 1B.  There may well be something to that, I don't know.

5-4 against the three best teams in the AL.  Hard to have a problem with that.

yanks
The way I look at it, we need to win 2 out of 3, because Elarton pitches Tuesday.  I just feel like we are giving that one away.  Especially against Wang.  I'll be there though, getting my Brett Pine Tar shirt.  My srategy for that game is probably opposite of everyone elses.  Everyone probably figures we should have someone ready in about the 2nd to get in there and try to save it from being terribel once Elarton has allowed 4 runs in 2 innings.  I figure, we rest the ENTIRE pen that whole game, make Scotty throw 9 innings, blow out his elbow, and we'll never see him again.  Is that mean of me to say?

lofty goal
Here's a lofty goal for us:  If we can go 5-2 in the next 7 (4 with NY, 3 with TEX), either take 3 of 4 from Yanks and 2 of 3 from Tex, or split with Yanks and sweep Tex, and the Twinkies go 2-4 on there road trip  (that includes a trip to Cleveland) we can go into Minnesota that next monday only 5 games out of 3rd.  Then we sweep the Twins, and we're 2 out of 3rd.

Hey, I said LOFTY goal, it's not terrible to dream, is it?

I dont mean to be rude but
all of you are a little pathetic. You watched the game and commented on things as it went on, like nice catch reggie and all this other crap. un-glue yourself from the internet for a couple hours, go out to the bar and talk to real people. sorry if that hurts your feelings but its a little sad that you guys do this.

I Just Got Back
From the bar, where superbikes were spinning around in circles on the TV. Fortunately, the sound was muted.

Where I am, no real breathing human is interested in baseball other than the Mariners, much less the Royals, and I'm beginning to like the little community here on this blog.

I spent the last 2 games in my yard, puttering and hanging out in the sun, listening to the game via internet on my outdoor speakers. Maybe you should get out of the bars for a few hours and.......oh, never mind.

If You Read
This blog more often, you'd know I've been following KC baseball longer than anyone else here. I fell out of touch when the Royals fell out of the national consciousness, but I still paid some attention. With the GMDM revolution in progress, I rekindled my interest in the team and found this site, as well as the WHB radio feed for the games on the internet.

By the way, George Alusik was a childhood hero of mine, and you could look it up.

It's a good activity
to enjoy while playing with my ten month-old and three year old.

Some of us don't have to go to a bar to hang out with "real people,"

but it does help to have people with whom to share informed commentary on tactical decisions within a game.  My kids are delightful, but don't really have well-formed opinions on bunting.

Anyhow, virtual communities are to be encouraged---read "Bowling Alone."

with me along with my wife and dad to watch this game, your point is of no signifance, your blaming your kids on not going out to watch a game, or watch the game on TV and leave the Blog alone. And the whole time i was at the bar watching the game i had 1 beer, so its not like im a drunk who hangs out in bars, i just believe in talking to people who dont hide behind a computer screen, and look up royals stats all day

When did watching a baseball game with a bunch of good fans become sad?  It's 2007 and talking to people through the web is an everyday thing.  I was at a bar.. on Saturday night until 3 a.m watching a few bands and hanging out with a bunch of friends, mostly women.  Sundays are for baseball and I hope one day you grow up and mind your business.
