Game 104 Open Thread- Rangers (46-58) at Royals (46-57)

The Royals go for their fourth straight victory and a series sweep of Texas today at the K. As Mike Votta points out in his game preview, the Royals have won three straight five times, but have only extended the winning streak beyond this point once.

The Rangers send Simi Valley Ca. native  CKameron Loe (5-8, 5.59 ERA) to the hill. Loe's now spent four big league seasons bouncing back and forth between the bullpen and the rotation, a method the Royals have used to the great frustration of many.

And to that end, the Royals counter with Leo Nunex (0-0, 2.25 ERA), who today will make his 50th big league appearance, but just his second  as a starter.

• RR favorite Sam Mellinger on Matthews and his loyalty to the Royals.

• Dutton on Dotel rumors.

----

Congrats to "buddyball" for correctly predicting last night's final score (although "royalsnation" also predicted 6-5, three hours later). He'll receive a free RR T-Shirt to commemorate his wisdom.

i wont be here for the game, have to go to church, but hopefully i can catch the last couple of innings.

im feeling confident today, i know there isnt a competition thingy but i will still have a stab at it....

royals 7 rangers 4

nunez pitches well again, 3 earned in 6 innings and our pen surrenders a run in the 7th before closing it out.

Wiffie LaPoo Shall Lead Us
Actually, he bats last, but his .161 BA gives him veteran presence you just can't buy.....for less than $5,000,000. Gordon supplants Teahen in the 3 hole; a first? Gload will bat 5th because....Gload will bat 5th. Still no Sanders trade.

Here's to a Royals sweep
Reminiscent of the final three games of the first half in 2003, when the Royals swept the Rangers. I'm predicting an 8-6 finish today. Leo Nunez goes 4-5 innings and gives up 4 runs. Peralta, Gobble, Soria, and Dotel close out the game.

All right a 1-2-3 inning for Nuney....
Lala actually made a catch.  He brings his powerful .161 ave. to this game.  I am sure the Rangers will put a new type of D. on just for Lala....

by slayor on Jul 29, 2007 2:54 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

it was...
a slow chopper between first and second and the second baseman charged hard but the ball got by him and rolled into no-man's land in the deep infield.  by the time the second baseman could get to the ball, gload had made it to second.  it wasn't an error because it would have been a very tough play.  just bad luck for the rangers.

Both Pitchers Are Being
Economical in very different ways:

Pitches-strikes - K Loe 35-21; L Nunez 32-22.

Ground balls-fly balls - K Loe 2-4; L Nunez 2-7.

Batters faced - K Loe 11; L Nunez 10.

Infield Double
High chopper to 2nd.  2nd baseman charged it and swiped at it but missed it completely with the ball rolling behind him to the edge of the dirt.  Due to the 2B momentum towards home plate and Gload's head up baserunning Gload was easily able to make it to 2nd.

by slayor on Jul 29, 2007 2:59 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Gload's infield double....
He chopped the ball high, really high, off the plate.

The second baseman charged and tried to make a quick play on it but it went under his glove without touching the glove.

Gload never slowed down around first and the right fielder had to charge into the edge of the infield to get the ball.

By that time Ross was standing on second with an infield double.

Is impressing big time so far. Two teams that put out pretty good O and he's shut them down. Little guys that throw a ton of heat usually don't last too long (supposedly), but Oswalt and Lincecum are both small guys that are "max-effort" and haven't really had injury problems (not comparing him to them by any stretch).

But, he doesn't cost much, might as well keep running his skinny ass out there and see what we've got.

I have yet to
see Nunez pitch live or on t.v. Anybody here seen him pitch. Is he for real, i.e. does he have good movement, or is he just having a good first couple of starts. If he is for real the Royals might not even need to look at starting pitching in the off season. Meche, Soria, Bannister, Nunez, then someone from the minors or Hudson sounds good to me.  What do ya'll think.

i like him...
...he's got a whippy arm action that has a similar effect to soria.  not great velocity, but sneaky speed.  he's a flyball pitcher, which means he can be susceptible to the long ball, but i think he probably has a place.

makes you wonder why dayton traded him for milton bradley...

My take on Nunez
(since TXroyal asked)

He's not great like Soria.  But his stuff is good.  Live fastball with a bit of movement at 92-94 plus a pretty good curve and slider.  And he controlled his stuff well in his two starts this year.  He's been pounding the strike zone consistently.

If he continues to develop, he could be a major league starter.  But my opinion is that he'll be a good middle reliever.

by NYRoyal on Jul 29, 2007 3:44 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Just got into this game with Nunez
I would be thrilled if Nunez developed into a reliable back of the rotation guy or a long reliever.  I think it is an underrated role.  He is a young guy even with being rushed to KC a few years ago.  Another bonehead move of the past.

German isn't hitting as well as Grudz this season (not particularly close at the moment) and Esty's defense leaves something to be desired.  I've wanted the Royals to trade Grudz for quite a while.  I'm not so sure now...

i agree with you.  grudz is so solid.  and esteban is a perfect superutility guy.  he should play four games a week, once each at second, third, a corner outfield and DH.  unless someone gives up a ML-ready prospect, i say keep grudz.

It's a silly kids' game...
...that highly-gifted people have played at an exceptional level for a hundred and mumble years.  Everything that could possibly happen in a baseball game has happened.  Until...

That's why this game is magic.

Score 11 runs in the first inning?  It's still a ball game.  Be down a gillion runs in the bottom of the Ninth?  It's still a ball game.

We all know the percentages.  Part of the obsession of being a baseball fan is putting some mathematical probability to human performance.  This is what makes baseball fans candidates for insanity.

As I write, the Roylz are up 10-0.  But the Pads scored 11 runs in one inning.  It could happen.

And that's why people like us don't head for the parking lot to beat the traffic.

That's why my girlfriend has to get used to me sitting in the parking lot of the movie-plex last night, to hear how the Roylz snatched victory from the jaws of defeat from the jaws of victory in 20 minutes.  She saw it all, thanks to the magic of radio play-by-play, (she's an incredible woman), but she thinks she won because the Roylz won anyway.

And all we missed in the theater were whatever previews preceded the live-action "Alvin and the Chipmonks" trailer.

For those of you who have a life outside baseball, "The Simpsons Movie" is better than a lot of episodes, but not as good as their best.

We can talk all we want about trades and stuff.  I happens.  But the really nice thing about this team is that there is a critical core of players who PLAY THE GAME!

I get frutrated by baserunning mistakes and the triangles that let a fly ball fall between them.  But most of these guys get the game.

This is a good team to support and follow.

90% of this game is half mental

If you look at the major league standings on ESPN and click "overall", you'll see that the Royals are currently 23rd out of 30 major league teams.  And, of course, they're moving up the list.  Soon, I think they'll be out of the bottom third of major league teams.  Nice.

Within .5 games of the White Sox again
Chisox have lost and once we win this one, we'll again be on the doorstep of 4th place.

BTW, the Chisox have the play the Yankees next.

Will Leo be starting Friday in the Bronx against the Yankees?  If he does, it will be interesting to see how he deals with that kind of pressure.

Hes also an ass
Me and some buddies were sitting front row on the 3rd base side when he caught that Gordon foul-out.  We were yelling "ball ball" and he just tossed it back into play.  It's not like he has to give it to us but now I hate him for it.  In turn we heckled him the rest of the game.  Fuuun Game though, go Royals!!

great win guys.
not even close, just utter domination. i love the lineup tonight, teahen does better farther down in the lineup (apparently) and i love smirky hitting 3rd. that should be the longterm order, at least 3-4, so smirky and boom boom can bat back to back. it will be nice to see our future emerging...

great start by nunez, maybe this kid really is for real in the rotation. at the very least, he could be a very very good relief pitcher.

4 in a row boys, not to mention our second straight winning month.

its a good time to be a royals fan...

you cant blame buddy for keeping him out of the lineup tonight though, he had played 3 games in a row and day game after a night game blah blah blah.

Guys....that's a winner
This is a slogan I used at often times late last year....in this year's case, it's not so temporary, but....

Temporarily.....all is right with the world!  (But just temporarily, though)
