Your Newest Royal: Kyle Davies

The Royals have acquired 23 year old right hander Kyle Davies. Who is Kyle Davies?

Did someone call for a starting pitcher?

Kyle  Davies Career Stats

Video: Kyle Davies

Hiram Kyle Davies is from Decatur, Georgia, and was drafted in the fourth round of the 2001 draft by the local Braves, long been known to draft local guys. He stands at 6'2'', 205. Davies was impressive in his first pro season, with a 2.25 ERA in 56 innings and 53 strikeouts in 8 walks at age 17. He continued to pitch very well throughout the minors, posting a 3.50 ERA at age 18 in low A ball and a 2.89 ERA with over a strikeout per inning at age 19.

He got even better in 2004 at age 20 with 168 strikeouts in 137 innings with a 2.49 ERA between high A ball and AA. In 2005 he was promoted to AAA and had a 3.44 ERA in 73 innings with 62 strikeouts. This earned him his first taste of MLB action and he pitched well with a 4.93 ERA in 87 innings, although he had his first signs of control issues with 49 walks. He was named the #2 prospect in the Braves organization by John Sickels ahead of guys like Brian McCann and Jeff Franceour. He was the #4 prospect in the Braves system by Baseball America.

In May of 2006 Davies left a game against Florida with a groin injury. It was later revealed to be torn, and Davies missed ten weeks. 2006 turned out to be a wasted year as Davies posted a miserable 8.38 ERA in Atlanta.

This year at age 23 Davies has had mixed results in Atlanta as their fifth starter. He started strong the first week against the Mets, allowing just two runs in just under seven innings of work. He followed that by failing to get through the sixth in each of his next three starts. Since then, he has had four games where he has gone at least seven innings allowing just one run. He's also had four games allowing over five runs, including an eight run game on May 27 against Philadelphia. He did miss one start due to a strained left oblique muscle.

"We think the world of him," said manager Bobby Cox "He's just got to find a way to get it going again. He should be a 15-game winner."

On July 16 Davies was demoted to the bullpen. He gave up three walks and two hits without retiring a batter against the Reds. On July 19 he was demoted to AAA Richmond.

From the Atlanta Journal-Constitution just a few weeks ago:

"Kyle Davies has a good arm," was the first thing from the scout, when I asked him what he thought after watching Kyle pitch a couple nights ago.

Not, "Kyle Davies is a mess," or "Kyle Davies' confidence is shot," but "Kyle Davies has a good arm."

"He's not throwing as hard as he did before he hurt his groin," the scout said. "But he's got a good arm."

"So there are teams that believe Davies will be a good major league pitcher?" I asked him.

And he replied without hesitation, "I'd take him."

Davies throws a fastball in the low 90s, generally between 92-94. He throws a changeup in the low 80s and a big curveball. Baseball America at one point said Davies had the best changeup in the system. He has worked hard on his curveball, but it has still been a weakness for him after he abandoned a slider. It sounds like Davies has always done a good job commanding his fastball, its his off-speed stuff that gives him issues.

Welcome Kyle
I'm going to be patient with him and not expect him to be good right away.  I hope some of my fellow Royals fans will be patient with him as well.

We needed a starting pitcher
I loved what Nunez has done, but I'd worry about his stamina being in the rotation for more than the occasional spot start.  He needs to build up his strength for starting, since he's always been in the bullpen.  Davies will do well, I look at this like the Bannister trade in a lot of ways.  We got a good starter for an expendable reliever.  Great trade.

good work retro
way to dig up some info, i like the cox quote.

So what the hell has happened to Davies in the majors? His minor league numbers are brilliant, ton of strikeouts and a low walk rate. Then he goes to the big leagues and the K's disappear and he starts walking everyone. He seems like a good candidate to settle down in a low pressure situation in KC

I think he was rushed
Too much too soon when he wasn't ready.

by NYRoyal on Jul 31, 2007 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

As Royals fan, we know all about
young pitchers who are rushed.  Loss of confidence, questions of makeup, trying to hard, etc.  Perhaps a change of setting is just what he needed. With his background, it sounds like Davies has lots of potential.

For the Royals to improve, it is necessary to take a chance on a guy like Davies.  He could end up being a good one.  Only 23 years old.  Greinke, Soria, Davies - I like it!!  Let's face it, for Dotel (who was a rental for us anyway), Davies is a good return.  While never know who else was offered by other clubs - just speculation.

Don't forget
when he came up he was not only rushed but he was rushed to a contending team.  Of the few years he was up only last year were the Braves not in the playoff picture. So that is some added pressure to a young guy.

I'm okay with him
Hopefully this means that we are working towards never having a pitcher as bad as Scotty pitch for us ever again

Thanks for the post, RR
Looking at his minor league numbers, you would never guess his major league numbers would be so poor.

I have three additional comments:

  1. If he has command of only two pitches currently, how about using him in the bullpen for a while, with an eye towards the rotation in the future?
  2. If KC insists on putting him in the rotation, I would be happier if it were in place of Perez (although I know that's wishful thinking only...)
  3. Low to mid 90s FB, with a good changeup, but spotty results with either the curve or the slider? That is the EXACT description of Leo Nunez, isn't it? Why should Nunez be bumped for Davies?

I really like Davies...and
I completely agree with you on all three.  Let him be in the bullpen for the rest of the year and work with the pitching coach.  (I still want us to hire Saberhagen as a consultant and have him work with our staff).

The Braves Fans
Over at Talkingchop (yeah..I know), they joke that there is actually two players..Evil Davies and Good Davies.  I hope we only traded for Good Davies.

Going to have to back off my disappointment
a bit, anyway. I suppose maybe the rumors of we could get for Dotel got a bit out of hand. Now that I stop and think about a 23-year-old guy with some promise is a good return for a guy who, one way or another, was not going to finish the season a Royal.

I do wonder if the Royals will slot him into the rotation immediately or what? It's time for Odie "Dead Weight" Perez to be cut now if there wasn't someone foolish enough to take him off our hands. Davies could step in and take his place.

A mind without purpose will walk in dark places.

Don't like this at all
Why would anybody think taking John Schuerholtz castoff over Bill Bavasi castoff is a good idea. Anybody that John Schuerholtz is willing to trade immediately drops a lot in value for me.
Let's go Royals! And Let's go Timmeh!

That sounds overly simplistic
Definitely an overly simplistic analysis.  If Moore and his scouts like Davies, then I like Davies.  Meche, Bannister and Soria have built up a lot of trust in me.

Dotel Hype Too High
I guess he was not worth what we thought or what was rumored.  Although if Davies was good enough to start a bunch of games for the Braves, and if Moore rates him highly, it may turn out to be a good acquisition.  It certainly seems better to have a good arm under contract through 2011 than to have Dotel for another 20 or so appearances.

by brian on Jul 31, 2007 6:50 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

that last line...
is the biggest thing in this entire trade. we can talk all we want about whether or not it was fair value for dotel (i think it was for the record), but the key is whether you want having a potential #3 under your control until 2011 or a oft-injured, "good" closer for 2 months.

even if davies doesnt work out and sucks at the major league level, it was STILL a good deal (depending on what else was offered, etc.) because of the potential involved.

Can't Butler get a day off ever?
I'd rather it come against the Twins than against the Yankees this weekend.

wow
it's like buddy felt sympathy for a lot of guys tonight or he's trying to remind moore who is still on the team that needs to be traded...this will be a tough lineup to win with. On the other hand, Emil does seem to hit runners in every time they're on base in front of him. Maybe Grudz can keep getting on base and score a couple of times.

mlb.com seems to agree with Buddy
Here's what the mlb preview had about tonight's lineup... "Emil Brown has worn out Silva in his career, going 8-for-17 (.471) with a home run and four doubles. John Buck is 5-for-11 (.455) with a homer and three doubles, but he might not be in the lineup because Jason LaRue caught De La Rosa's gem against the Yankees."

after today
there is a real chance we will end the game with two guys under the Mendoza line in the starting lineup.  Someone should look this up and see if its the latest  in the season something like this has happened.

by TXroyal on Jul 31, 2007 7:14 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I guess the philosophy
Is to not play Reggie Sanders anymore. I'd rather Gload play first over Smith with Reggie/Emil be in the outfield.  Who knows?

Sanders apparently has another hamstring injury
According to today's Star.  I wonder if he's done for the season.

GMDM said
in his interview's yesterday when talking about Sanders, that he is likely to go back on the DL in the next couple of days because of his hamstring

Good thing we didn't get any
offense via trade. Scoring runs is overrated. I understand everyone's points about how this Davies kid is only 23 and the "could bes" and "ifs". Whatever, it`s done. He`s here. So, we'll move on. With the extremely poor offensive options that are available this offseason, offense would've been the way I'd have gone. But, I'm not the GM. I do hope that the rumors that we could've gotten Balentien were very false. Because, if not, I would be sad that Allard Baird is gone. Yeah, that sounds harsh, but the talent difference between the two is large. I just think the report had to be false.

Will we
get Dotel back?  He'll be a free agent soon in a few months, right?

possible

More analysis on the Dotel trade
From Baseball Prospectus today:

Acquired RHP Kyle Davies from the Braves for RHP Octavio Dotel. [7/31]

This is exactly the racket that Dayton Moore needs to be in, and while familiarity with Davies from his days in the Braves' organization certainly didn't hurt--not to mention an amicable relationship with his former employers--Moore realized a nifty little return on a veteran rental, a nice bit of execution in a deadline where we didn't really see much like it achieved by anybody. Davies has his control issues, but perhaps repetition will breed confidence; he still has a good fastball, he still has an impressive curve, and if the Braves understandably didn't have the time to invest in the handholding that might be necessary to bring him to the point of becoming a quality big league starter, the Royals have no such stresses where the exigencies of the present are concerned. If there's a blue ribbon to be handed out for bringing in a prospect for an investment in a veteran rental, it has to go to Moore.
