Interview With Dayton Moore

I just finished listening to the Dayton Moore on 810.  He mentioned that the trade for Davies allows them to get a young starting pitcher who they can control through 2011.  He adds to the stable of pitchers in the KC system, which does not have great depth.  Kyle Davies will start one of the games in New York, probably Friday or Saturday.  He said it is important to get him into the rotation.  Kyle has a compact delivery, very good stuff, three above average pitches, but get in trouble with leaving his fastball up in the zone.  He also mentioned he has a good delivery, and that he didn't have any major flaws they wanted to fix.  Dayton also said Kyle has a good curve ball and a straight change.  Dayton and the scouting staff believed that this was the best deal available for them.  There were no hitters offered to them who projected to be more than a number seven hitter so they took a change on a young pitcher.

With Dotel gone, Soria will close games.  They like Zack pitching multiple innings.  Also, they want to be able to limit Soria's innings b/c he has pitched all year.  With both players Dayton mentioned that they are not sure of there future roles.  They are still deciding.

Dayton seems to want to keep Nunez a starter now b/c it allows him to better develop his control of his off speed pitches.  He likes the development Nunez is showing so they don't want to convert to the bullpen.  There long term plan is for Nunez to be a reliever because they don't think his body can handle being a starter due to his delivery.

I heard that interview and he made good points
Some of my favorites were:
  1. Nunez needs to be used as a starter somewhere, if not in KC, then in Omaha.  He needs to work on his secondary pitches and that is only going to happen if he's working as a starter.
  2. Everyone in the front office agreed that Davies was the best offer.  He stressed that they were unanimous, which rarely happens.

So if both Nunez and Davies are in the
starting rotation, who is odd man out?  Or are we going with a 6 man rotation?  Odie would be my choice...but, who????

He didn't come right out and say it, but...
...Nunez will most likely being going down to Omaha.

Me too
Nothing good comes from Perez in the rotation.  That doesn't help the Royals in the short-term or the long-term.

Interesting
You have to love the direction of this franchise, or that this franchise seems to have direction for the first time in years.  Honestly, great news.  Great day for Royal blue.

agreed.
also interesting, obviously balentien wasnt offered because he is without a doubt more than a "projected 7 hitter".

i like davies and look forward to seeing him start this weekend.

i also like keeping nunez in the rotation as of now, but also keeping an eye on making him a bullpen-er in the future. he strikes me as the replacement to soria (set up soria) once soria moves to the rotation, i am really in love with him.

Wow the rumors must
have been way off if the best they were offered was a seven hole hitter.

One more interesting thing
When Moore was asked something like, "why did you get a pitcher instead of a power hitting position player," he talked about how important pitching was and how they needed more depth and more options.  Interestingly, he also said that having this kind of depth might give them the opportunity in the future to put a trade together which could get an impact position player.

You can never have too much pitching up
and down the organization.  Go GMDM.....'bring em on."

Good report -- thanks
The deal seems to make sense.  I had not heard before that teams project hitters based on how high up in the line up they can hit.

I Agree With The
Idea of grooming Nunez as a long reliever. This is a facet of the game that is becoming increasingly important. Let him start until he proves he can't do it, and watch the pitch count closely.

If Nunez can't go 9 ever and has problems getting to 7 regularly, middle relief is a good role for him. I'd like to see him develop his pitches in the bigs; that's where they need to work. This year is all about next year and beyond.

Being a fan is irrational, but what is the alternative?

One other point
If Davies sticks, the pitching staff looks pretty close to set next year.  In some order, in some role:

Meche
Bannister
Soria
Greinke
Gobble
Bale
Riske
Davies
De La Rosa
Peralta

That doesn't include Braun, Nunez, Musser, Hocheavar, Lumsden, Buckner, Christiansen or others.

Point being, looks like the club is unlikely to spend major offseason coin on pitching.

Doesn't that mean the $30-35 million freed up in expiring contracts is available for bats?

Put me down for Adam Dunn.
