Game 130 Open Thread- Tigers (71-60) at Royals (57-72)

This matters to no one, but Iowa City is quite possibly the hottest place on the face of the Earth today, a climatological occurrence which made the first day of classes incredibly uncomfortable. Well, for this instructor at least. Spending half an hour elbow deep in a jamming copier didn't help either...

In falling to the Indians 5-3 in extra innings Sunday afternoon, the Royals squandered a small but significant opportunity to leave their own impression upon the AL Central Pennant Race. Instead, the Indians slinked out of town with a respectable 2-1 series' victory and whatever sense of self-worth is possible to those professional athletes who are forced to live in Cleveland.

As fate the MLB scheduler would have it however, the Royals get another crack at relevance, as the Motor City Kitties come to town for three epoch changing games at the K. Tonight, its our man Brian Bannister (10-7, 3.28 ERA) in his continuing quest to finish a distant second to Dice-K in the AL ROY vote.

The Tigers counter with Nate Robertson (7-10, 4.80 ERA), who, despite working the Rec Specs, actually isn't that hardcore. I want my bespectacled athletes insane, dangerous and self-destructive, not back of the rotation roster filler who get by on changing speeds.

In other news
shockingly, we've decided to give a beauty queen a second-chance

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070828/ap_on_re_us/miss_teen_south_carolina

side note: when did the analysis of "America loves to give people second chances" go from being somewhat salient analysis to just a total cliche... i've probably heard 20 different people on ESPN alone use to for Michael Vick

by Freneau on Aug 28, 2007 6:31 PM EDT reply actions

That was the best answer
...I've ever heard a Miss ___ give in one of those beauty pageants.  I am, of course, referring to her original live on the air answer.  It was so amazing incoherent.  She got more and more lost with ever word.  It was immensely entertaining.  I'm pegging her IQ at about 85.

I'm guessing she'll be SI or ESPN's next Jenn Sterger.

I am ashamed to have laughed
It really is more sad than funny.  Somehow I expect she will do just fine in life for the next 20 years just the same.

by James Quinn on Aug 28, 2007 7:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I'd say 10 years
She'll probably be able to ride those looks to some kind of success for the next 10 years.  Then, she'll start fading a bit, overcompensate with too much plastic surgery and her lifelong fake baking will start turning into leathery skin.  Once her looks are gone, she'll have nothing left to fall back on...except perhaps her rich husband.

by Scott McKinney on Aug 28, 2007 7:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably about the same time
they decided that Vick's actions equated to a one-time, pardonable offense, and not a history of repeated d-baggery.  There's a big difference (in my mind) between someone slipping up once ("Whoops, I can't believe I propositioned that undercover cop!" - just as a random example) or repeatedly and intentionally breaking the law for years.

Not to say I think he should be banished for life; his actions are certainly no worse than those of Leonard Little and countless others.  But to see a little kid holding up a sign that says (something along the lines of) "People make mistakes!" is a touch frustrating to me.

Here at KU we are into our third week of classes.  The daily high temperature has varied between say, 94 and 102 each day.

My wish finally came true and I have an office with a window this year.  Well, one-third of an office with a window.  It is soooo hot and the air conditioning in the building soooo old that the office is about 85 degrees most of the day.  I've watched one of my office mates visibly sweat almost every day we have been working together.

This cannot be normal.  Something bad is happening in the world.  My old dog cannot walk with me to my office any longer.  She gets too tired and wants to lay down after about a mile.

On a positive note, I think the Royals will have three, maybe four, rookies in the AL top-10 list this year.  Certainly Bannister and Soria will be ranked high.  Gordon has turned it on and will end the year with respectable numbers.  And Pena, not too shabby all in all.  That is quite a bumper crop.

I have organized a Historians at the Ballpark day for Sept. 8th vs. the hated Yankees.  I think 12-20 folks from the department will make the pilgrimage to the K.  For many of the new grad students and faculty it will be their first Royals game.  Spreading the good word.

Tonight's heros!
German, LF
DeJesus, CF
Grudzielanek, 2B
Butler, DH
Brown, RF
Gload, 1B
Buck, C
Gordon, 3B
Pena, SS

I don't get dropping Gordon down to #8.  Emil is in a good position to build on his team lead in RBI's.  I also do not get why Buddy is playing Emil so much lately.  Do you think the Royals are really thinking about bringing him back?  By arbitration rules they would have to pay him at least 80% of his salary this year.  That would be over $2.5M I think.

by James Quinn on Aug 28, 2007 7:36 PM EDT reply actions

Emil Brown, can not be offered less
than $2,760,000 to return next year.  (80% of his $3.45M salary this year.)

I would be very surprised to see the Royals offer Emil arbitration again.  He seems very lame-ducky to me during these last weeks of the season.

Play some of the kids damn it Buddy!  Let's see what we have to work with next year!

No, I'm in Lawrence Kansas
Royals blackout zone.

The Lawrence Cable carries the Royals games pretty regularly until around August, and then they just kinda give up.  This is the second year in a row they followed this pattern.  I think they are only showing about two or three games a week lately.

this has been one of my favorite games of the year
at least of the month of august. not quite sure why, probably because we have thoroughly outplayed a team that went to the WS last season and is a serious WC contender this season. and butler dominated the ball over the wall.

by rockchalk on Aug 28, 2007 10:02 PM EDT reply actions

gator in left field
and (correct me if im wrong) im pretty sure he is wearing glasses.

must only put in his contacts when he think hes playing, so when he wasnt starting tonight, no contacts.

i might be wrong though...

by rockchalk on Aug 28, 2007 10:07 PM EDT reply actions

This was discussed on the radio
something about Gator having problems with his contact pre-game.

Does he look smarter when he wears glasses?

Weak, 2 strike double to sean casey
Bannister is giving up a ton of hits.  Who's up in the pen?

Take him out, pat him on the back, and let a rested bullpen take care of it

Bad luck
Not an easy pitch to hit and he gets some wood on it.

by MileHighKCfan on Aug 28, 2007 10:12 PM EDT reply actions

Don't most peoples say
that all lefties LOVE the ball low and inside? So why do our guys continue to get beat there? Last two hits, both up in the count, trying to go low and inside to lefties= base hits.

by Big Guy on Aug 28, 2007 10:13 PM EDT reply actions

Because the Tigers
are a good hitting team.

And then he gets a K down and in to a lefty, go figure.

Tigers announcers
"The Royals really got the better end of the Burgos-Bannister deal."

Understatement of the year.

by nycroyal on Aug 28, 2007 10:14 PM EDT reply actions

too soon
Bannister's been great.

But... Burgos has put up a 3.42 ERA, with a 1.10 WHIP in 17 games for NY this season.  Not too shabby.

Unlike the Sisco trade, I liked this deal when it went down, mainly because we were trading for a position of need.  Still, it's still too early to say whether Burgos won't turn out to be anything good.   I believe he's got a good shot at being an Armando Benitez-type reliever.  I think Bannister may be a Jeff Suppan-type starter (though at this point, he looks better).

Which is more valuable?  I think any answer you'll get to that question will be subjective...

by marbotty on Aug 28, 2007 10:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Big strikeout for Bannister!
He really gives a damn.  He really seems to want the wins.  I like it.  I am pretty sick of players who are indifferent.  Burgos, I'm thinking of you.  Great trade.  Bannister for Burgos.

by James Quinn on Aug 28, 2007 10:17 PM EDT reply actions

Hiram needs to take notes.
Davies would have gotten bombed with the stuff Banny took to the mound. BB goes 6 innings giving up 2 and hopefully leaves with a four run lead.

by Big Guy on Aug 28, 2007 10:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Damn straight.
And who is the rookie!  Hirim has two years MLB time on Bannister (and probably twice as much natural talent) but you'd never know it by watching him in a game.

I'm still pretty cool on the whole Davies thing.  He doesn't look like long-termer to me.

by James Quinn on Aug 28, 2007 10:26 PM EDT up reply actions

the only quibble is
who else were we offered?

Maybe Hiram was the best deal out there.  We don't really know.  If the Seattle paper was accurate and Balentien was offered up, then Moore blew it.

But maybe all we were offered were Miguel Ascencio's?   I don't know.  I do know that Davies was a bit depressing a haul after seeing the Linebrink deal and seeing Betemit going to the Yanks for S. Proctor.

Presuming there's still a premium on Closers With Experience, one would have to think we'd at least net a deal on par with those...

by marbotty on Aug 28, 2007 10:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not arguing against the trade
I think it was a reasonable trade.  Dotel was not an elite pitcher.  The Royals were only going to get so much.

That said, I don't think much of Davies at this point.

I guess if it had been me in charge of the Royals I would have been looking for some infield prospects at the high-A or AA level for Dotel.

by James Quinn on Aug 28, 2007 10:36 PM EDT up reply actions

i'm playing devil's advocate here
i thought dotel for davies was pretty bad for us at the time (and that hasn't changed too much)

because no matter how good you are, you cant always have your best stuff.

banny and meche can both do that, no one else on our staff can (namely jdlr and davies). hopefully that changes over the winter...

oh, and soria strikes me as somebody who would be able to do it too.

Tiger announcers suttley
implying that it is the Royals' quiet crowd accounting for their deficit, ie Det is used to playing in a noisy environment after the NY series.

you know, you spot this bullpen a 5 run lead
And we win 90-95% of the games, I think.

That's actually a huge departure from teams in the past, and it makes it fun to be a fan of the team.

good inning by jo-el
impressively worked out of the lead off base hit.

if we blow this lead tonight after sundays game the bullpen good will will have disappeared.

by rockchalk on Aug 28, 2007 10:38 PM EDT reply actions

Eh, this isn't the same bullpen
It was with Greinke (and even Dotel) in it. I was way more comfortable with GReinke than I am with Peralta, and Soria has been a bit shakey lately.

Peralta's almost exactly the same pitcher he was
last year.  Not stellar, but solid.  I'd say above-average or slightly above-average.  We could certainly do a lot worse.

Taking Greinke out of the pen is a loss, certainly, but if you realize that he's starting now and Perez is not, you come to the conclusion that the team is so much better off...

that was a good find by baird, he was always good at finding spare parts like jo-el. just not through FA and he definately wasnt good at finding star caliber players, i mean he thought neifi perez would be one.

by rockchalk on Aug 28, 2007 10:53 PM EDT up reply actions

i thought Glass pushed for Perez
but regardless, Benito for Nunez was one of Baird's best trades, hands down

Is it my imagination
or has Soria not been the same since he lost Greinke as his setup man? Does he see the two of them as a one-two punch and he feels off his rhythm without his proper partner or something?

by cmkeller on Aug 28, 2007 11:12 PM EDT reply actions

I'm worried about Soria
Not because we might blow this game, but because he's had a stretch of pretty bad pitching.

So help me, if Buddy overused this guy and gets him injured, I'm going to cut the tendons out of his arm to sew into Soria's. Without anesthetic.

...the twinkies have been playing too well of late for us to think about catching them.  i think our goal should be to play the rest of the season 500, which would bring our seasonal winning percentage to, say, 460 or so.

Congratulations
from a Tigers Fan. You spoiled "the party" again ;).

16 Tigers Hits and only 3 runs. 6 Royals Hits and 6 Runs. So, you deserved it. Brian Bannister is a tough one to overcome (although he gave up 11 Hits) and the Royals worked Nate Robertson very well.

I always have a soft spot for the Royals (althoug not when they are playing the Tigers ;) ) and I really hope that they get better and better (after the next 2 games of course). It's great to see the White Sucks now at the bottom.

btw: You have 6 games remaining against the Indians. Bring them on

Dirk; my wife is from Dulken, about 60K from Dusseldorf. I'm pulling for the Los Tigres (except when they play the Royals, of course) to keep the Yanks out of the series should they make the post-season again. We're working on that Indians thing, too. We'll do our best to help you out there.

It was a dark and stormy night....
When they say tornadoes and then actually mention Zooks Spur I get worried.  From about 6 pm. to 4 am. it rocked and rolled to the Mother Nature beat.  Subsequently, I missed the game on the computer and the reception was so bad on KWKY that I gave up.

Great game though...Banns looked very good and the youngsters actually led the way.  I don't understand Fuddo's lineup but I haven't understood much that he has done this season.

The weather gods have promised that the next ten days will be storm free.  Ya sure you betcha...  Anyway...Go Blue and lets get another win tonight.
