Game 155 Open Thread- Royals (67-87) at Tigers (84-71)

The Royals can secure a series victory and possibly eliminate the Tigers from the AL Central race with a win today in Detroit.

The Tigers send Justin Verlander (17-6, 3.70 ERA) to the mound, while the Royals counter with Jorge de la Rosa (8-11, 5.40 ERA), who'll be making his first start since a 5-3 loss to the Twins back on July 31.

Arrowhead Pride has an open thread going for this Chiefs game.

Anyone read the Star this morning?
Bob Dutton on "Bonds to KC? Unlikely, but ..."

http://www.kansascity.com/sports/royals/story/287263.html

Somehow, "unlikely" doesn't seem to accurately reflect those circumstances.

by CentralChamps2009 on Sep 23, 2007 12:29 PM EDT reply actions

This explains a lot
Also from the Star:  Commenting on John Bale's performance last night, Buddy called Bale "This kid..."

I'm aware everybody may seem to be a kid to Buddy, but if Buddy thinks of Bale as a "kid", then it's no wonder he thinks Gload and Brown need lots of September at bats as well, they're just "kids".

8 days to go...

I like Grudz getting a day off, and Smith does surprise us with his sneaky power.  I do not hate him anymore.  He is like German's bizzaro twin.  German is the utility infielder with the OBP, Smith is the utility infielder with the SLG%.  If only we could mash them together.

Brazell and Huber might as well go look for the taco vender up in the cheap seats.

Butler DH, Gload 1B.  Butler's learning process continues.  Buddy is quoted on KCRoyals.com saying Butler needs to learn first base, but he would rather have him do so during the winter.  Good plan.  Have Butler learn to play 1B when you and most of the coaching staff are not around.  Sounded like he just didn't want to have to deal with Butler's crappy defense this month so pushed the problem off to the next manager.  God I'm cynical.

Because it's the Royals
A mash-up of those two would get us a low-OPB, low SLG utility fielder, or, more accurately, Andres Blanco.

He just looks frustrated out on the mound
Like a guy that knows he has great stuff, but cannot pitch a decent game to save his life. Example: Today, Polanco hits a ball out of the strike zone for a base hit, Raburn flips a double into the left field corner, makes a great pitch to Guilllen that turns into a base hit, then gets pissed and throws a fastball down the middle for a 2 run HR. Result: disaster.

Last time I went back to Dayton
I was with an old college friend, her husband, and my wife.  It had been about 8 years since my last visit.  My friend and I were walking all over campus and having good memories.  The spouses just thought we were jacked up.  We were walking around in our memories, and they were walking around a pretty unimpressive campus in a run-down city.

Nothing looked quite as nice as I remembered it being, and campus was smaller than I remember it being.  And I was unhappy with some of the changes.  The, "you can never go home" feeling.

The world of our memories is always better than the world of our lives.

by marbotty on Sep 23, 2007 2:05 PM EDT reply actions

Must be. He has thrown a few curves.
One in the dirt.  An earlier curve looked great to me on TV.  12-6, broke down and either clipped the bottom of the zone or was just low.  Swing and miss pitch.

I'm glad he is pitching this well.  If he busts it will just be killer to the Royals hopes of fielding a winning team in 2009+.
