Heads Up: Rany's Chatting at BP

As Don Henley said, "who knows how long this will last", but at this moment, Rany is chatting at BP.

He's already taken a Teahen question, so onto other topics...

I do like the response to the Teahen question...
it is a very wierd place for the Royals...do we sign Greinke/Teahen/Gordon/Butler to long contracts???...Butler is the only one that came out strong, but his build and fielding say no...so what should GMDM do?...

I say evaluate Greinke COMPLETELY...and then sign him long term...I am out of the loop on the money evaluations, but I'm gonna say something like 5/$30?...get Gordon way cheap like 7/$70?...and Teahen like 4/$28...tell them all to shut their mouth and play and hope for the best???...would this even come close to doing the right thing for the organization?????????? just pulling Carlos Pena type deals???????  if you were a player wouldn't you go for 28-70 mil and a guaranteed good life and just play like a hoss?

With those deals
...you have to take into account how many pre-arbitration and arbitration years they have left.  While I think Gordon is going to be better than Teahen, he's not worth 7/70 right now because the Royals have him for 2 more pre-arb years and 3 arbitration years.  Even if he's a truly great player for the next 5 years, he'd probably only earn:

2008 400K (pre-arb)
2009 400K (pre-arb)
2010 3M (arb)
2011 6M (arb)
2012 10M (arb)

Then let's say 15M for each of the next two years.  That adds up to 7/49.4M.  Teahen, on the other hand only has only three free agency years in front of him, so if we signed him to a long-term deal it would likely be for more money per year than Gordon's.

I probably disagree with you.

I'm very ignorant...
when it comes to this, so this is a good exercise...damn you Bobby Seay for finding an out clause...it seems like baseball has a lot of disdain for younger players...I kind of c y Ryan Howard isn't happy with the Phillies...it seems you have to overpay for under performing veterans and underpay for over performing youth...youth is very erradict these days...but has any seen the movie Sicko and started hating America?

Let's say, hypothetically,
Each Royals player produces at the level we think they are capable of through this season.  Here is how I would (theoretically, keep in mind) handle the long-term contracts.

Teahen = mid-season 2008
Soria = mid-season 2008
Bannister = offseason 2008-09
Buck = offseason 2008-09
Greinke = offseason 2008-09
Gordon = offseason 2008-09
Butler = early 2009
Callaspo = mid-2009
Hochevar = mid-2009

Obviously, some of the players listed above will not provide that maximum potential.  Some will prove difficult in negotiations.

And of course, whether Glass will commit to all of these hypotheticals can and should be relevant.  But I will maintain that locking up our homegrown talent will be a cornerstone - a vital factor - of Dayton Moore's tenure with the Royals - and more importantly - to the "New Era" in which he has instilled.

Rany is starting a Royals blog
Should be interesting.
I probably disagree with you.

Nice!
If that happens, we'll have a nice little online juggernaut here at "Royals Nation" (using the term loosely).

From....

Joe Posnanski's blog
Rob Neyer's blog
Rany's blog
and, of course, Will's blog here at Royals Review,

We might be proving that Internet and market size are not at all related!

(Or some such!)

My reviews
JoPo's blog - It has good writing and is updated frequently, but the Royals content is intermittent at best.  And I'd only give his Royals analysis a "C".

Rob & Rany on the Royals - I like the content, but it has gotten the point where it is only updated about 6 times a year.  So it is ultra-light on content.

Royals Review - The best Royals site on the net with tremendous articles and commentators.

I think I'll like Rany's blog.  He tends to be realistic/optimistic with genuine intelligence and insight.

I probably disagree with you.

Unlike
Rob "the Royals will never win the World Series" Ney(say)er.

What a dumb comment to make.  I don't care who the source was.

Rob & Rany
I bet it moves to Rany's Royals blog.  Or, if Neyer doesn't want to do that, I think it will die.
I probably disagree with you.

Neyer
I don't even mind that he says that, it's the other bafoonish (word?) stuff he says, like PIT and KC won't even be around in 15 years.

But, he's basically a turd.

i have to admit...
I'm excited and scared about the idea of Rany starting a Royals blog...

I wish I could post more and better than I can here.

Scared?
Are you scared because you are worried about the competition?  If so, I doubt there is much cause for worry there.  I bet Rany's Royals blog will be a lot like JoPo's blog.  He'll write things semi-regularly (although almost certainly not as frequently as JoPo does) and there will be comments.  I doubt he'll create an online community with the functionality that this site has.
I probably disagree with you.

My loyalty lies with you Will
You got there first.
"I'm tired of all these stupid a$$ questions every day. Why the f**k would I hit Brett for Miller?" The rest is history.

Funny thing is,
we got a hella good product in my estimation. :)
