Open Thread - ST Game #2 - Royals v. Padres

I'm up for this again, and this time it's an MLB.TV broadcast.  Who's with me?

By and large, this game is just as meaningless as the last one, perhaps even more meaningless considering that the opener versus the Rangers at least exposed how vulnerable Arkansas is to torn Texas-KC loyalties. As Will said, in time, it will be ours.

This game nevertheless holds some sentimental value for me as Nomomania will finally be coming to KC.    When Nomo broke into the league with the Dodgers he was a baseball sensation with his tornado wind-up and killer split, not to mention a cool name and legendary status as the Japanese trailblazer.  I can still recall donning my Nike Air Nomo cleats to take the mound during Pee Wee games, and while I tried to learn how to throw a split using one of those cheap color-coded balls with the different pitch grips, it never worked out.

Anyways, to get to my point: Being a KC fan as a kid was not that fun because it was precisely these types of sensations that the team, and we as a result, collectively "missed out" on. For those who grew up in the 80's you had Bo, and in the early 90's George Brett was still an icon, though an ageing one.  But for those who came to be in the 90's, there wasn't much to go on.  Hammer Hamelin was maybe the closest thing, and he only had one strike-shortened season in the sun.

So forgive me if I'm somewhat excited that Nomomania has arrived, albeit 10-15 years late.  He may be washed up and have a .0000001% chance of making the 25-man, but just seeing him on the mound again will bring out the kid in me.

When I was a kid
I put up three pictures in my room of pitchers - David Cone, Kevin Appier and Hideo Nomo.

As an Asian-American kid (although not Japanese), I thought it was cool that there was this Asian guy making it in MLB, and being successful.

Just some general MLB.TV advice...
Get this free program from Download.com called OnTop (it's also called Planetscott 1.0). It will allow you to set any specific window to "Always Be On Top." Unzip the file to a folder somewhere you can remember where it is (mine's on my desktop). Once it's unzipped, run ontop. Then right click the menu bar of any window (i.e. the MLB.TV window) and set to always on top. You then can post on Royals Review while still watching the action.

You may find that the MLB.TV window is just too darn big, especially for work. You need to be able to work and watch your game in the corner of your screen. Unfortunately, at least in Internet Explorer, you can't change the size of the window because of the Media Player programming. Let's beat the system:

  1. Log into MLB.TV. Pull up a game.
  2. Make sure you're using the old mediaplayer. If you're using the new mediaplayer (with Silverlight), click the link in the top right to change to the old mediaplayer.
  3. Once the old mediaplayer has loaded, Press CTRL-N on your keyboard to open a new window (sorry MAC folks, I don't know the keystroke for you). It will open the mediaplayer in a new window - which is sizable. Take that MLB.TV.
  4. You can now right click on the video, and select Zoom > 50%. Now the video should be small enough to put in the corner of your screen. Resize the window, scroll till you have the small video in the small window.
  5. Combine your small window with ontop, and you have a 'work'able MLB.TV solution.

Dare I say it, Berroa seems to be teeming on the 'unprofessional' with his perpetual mistakes.  What did he do this offseason?  Is he not fighting for a comeback?  I see little fire from the former-ROY.  Taken alone, I won't count mistakes against a man....mistakes are mistakes. But his faux-pas combined with his lackadaisical attitude is just unprofessional.  He should be ashamed.

so many great comments.:)  i love this place.

would it be at all possible for those who listened to post a miniature box score at the end?  mlb and espn dont seem to give much about pitching.  something like

Meche: 0 ER, 2 hits
Nomo: 1 ER, 2 hits

etc.  i know thats a fair bit of work, so of course no worries if not!  i think it'd sort of make this site stand out even more as a go to place.  once i have my mlb audio up and running, and i listen to some games, i'd be glad to do one.:)
