Royals most recent lineup suggestion...and mine

http://kansascity.royals.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080321&content_id=2449410&vkey=spt20 08news&fext=.jsp&c_id=kc

The above link suggests the royals want Alex Gordon to be their 3 hitter, using this lineup.  While it's much better than the previous lineup suggestion which had Gload hitting 3 (I can't find the link on the team site but there was a story early in spring training about it), I still have my own preference for a few reasons.

The site's lineup projection:
CF Dejesus
2b Grudz
3b Gordon
RF Guillen
DH Butler
1b Gload
LF Teahen
C  Buck
SS Pena, Jr.

This lineup's benefits: It protects Gordon, who needs pitches to hit due to his strikeout tendencies.  It also puts Teahen in a spot to drive-in runs after several productive hitters, while not relying too much on his power increase.
Its weaknesses: The 3 hole is usually for a team's BEST all around hitter, which in our case is likely Butler.  Also, it burdens Guillen w/ the clean-up role, as opposed to the 5 spot/RBI man hole he filled in Seattle.  But perhaps the biggest weakness is that it creates a RR/LL in the 4-7 spots.  While we're not in the NL where matchups are more important, this could be a problem in later innings, w/ out machines Buck (admittedly a better hitter against lefties) and Pena following the bunch.

My lineup
CF Dejesus
2b Grudz
DH Butler
3b Gordon
RF Guillen
LF Teahen
C  Buck/Olivo
1b Gload
SS Pena

Benefits: Good R/L balance throughout.  Allows power production of catchers to be meaningful.  Puts Gload in a contact spot, perhaps his best asset.  Has our BEST hitter in the 3 hole, an emerging power hitter in the 4 hole w/ protection of a legitimate power/RBI guy in the 5 hole.  Gordon can only thrive when people will give him better pitches to hit.  In the bottom of the order last year, there was no incentive to throw him strikes.  I also like Teahen in the 6 spot, which usually is a contact spot, but Teahen, despite his strikeouts, is a run producer, much moreso than Gload or others that could fill the spot.

Weaknesses: I understand the reasons why we have Buck batting 8th.  But too often last year no one was on base when he hit home runs, through no fault of his own.  I perceive the benefit of having that power increase run production and eliminating a LL in the 6/7 hole to be greater than the benefit of having a better contact hitter in Gload take the 7 spot.  As for the 3/4/5 criticisms, it all seems to come from how you view the 3 and 4 hitters.

All in all, the discussion around lineups is pretty futile anyway.  Injuries and suspensions leave us w/ dozens of lineups during the season anyway.  As Hillman has said, speculating about it is sort of childish.  But, like a child would, I can only dream of the lineup that makes the most sense to me.

Didn't I read last season on RR
that someone thought lineups were meaningless.

They have very little impact...
...on runs scored and therefore wins and losses.  That doesn't mean they aren't fun to talk about.  But they just aren't going to affect the bottom line very much.
I probably disagree with you.

I actually really like your
lineup. I had never thought of that. But, I'd say that if Shealy keeps playing the way he is right now, he'd be my firstbaseman (or at least a platoon).

I went to that site
the runs per game for my lineup above is 4.691 using last year's stats (which may be flawed due to Gordon's year...assuming of course it was a rookie slump type season)...for the lineup suggested by hillman, 4.713, even better...fun toy...i encourage everyone to go play on that website.  it LOVES mark teahen as a leadoff guy.
Never giving up on your team is what makes you a good fan.

What that means for a full season
Your lineup: 759.9 runs
Hillman's lineup: 763.5 runs

for a net difference of 3.6 runs which amounts to about 1/3 of a win.  This is an excellent illustration of the degree of importance of one batting order vs. another.  Who plays is important.  Where they hit in the lineup is of minimal importance.

I probably disagree with you.

Butler as the 3 hole hitter
I have been a big supporter of Alex Gordon and the need for him to hit higher in the order.  But, for my money, I like Billy Butler in the 3 hole.  He is having a great spring training (yes, I know the stats are meaningless), has power, will take a walk and seems to have a knack for the RBI.  Putting Gordon in between Guillen and Butler would be a benefit as well.

Maybe it's just me but having Mark Teahen at the top of the order just doesn't do much.  He strikes out alot and hasn't put up the power numbers.  How many games in a row did he K at least once - 20 something?  I'd rather see him in the 6 or 7 slot.

DeJesus - CF
Grudz/Callaspo - 2B
Butler - DH
Gordon - 3B
Guillen - RF
Gload - 1B
Teahen - LF
Buck - C
Pena - SS

My Batting Order
With Esteban gone:

DDJ CF
Callie 2B
A-Gor 3B
Guillie RF (I give up)
Jeeves DH/1B
Teahie LF
Shealyie/Exgload 1B/DH
Moroni's Hammer/Olivo Oilo C
TPJ SS

Bench: Shealy/Gload, Olivo/Buck, Gritz, Gathright

With Gritz on the bench, we could move Callaspo wherever necessary and insert him at 2B if needed. I think Gritz makes a good PH to have on the bench, with one of the 1B/C platoon providing the ever popular pop off the bench. If we go with 11 pitchers, I'd like to see Aviles break camp on the 25.

I'm not getting older....oh, wait, yes I am....and slower.... and weaker. God, this is great!
