Royals-Brewers Random Exhibition Game Open Thread
Watching the White Sox and Diamondbacks late last night on tape delay really fired me up. It finally dawned on me that real baseball is almost here, something I'm still not prepared for, but nevertheless am looking forward to. The most anticipated Royals season since 2004 gets started in two days. Incredible.
The Royals take on the Brewers tonight in Milwaukee for no apparent reason. Let's just hope no one gets injured. I'll be curious to see what the attendance in Wisconsin is.
- I believe it was during one of the very first Spring Training games that I made the now infamous comment that I liked Jason Smith's "pop off the bench". Well, as NyRoyal points out in the diaries, Smith was a real Big Bite at the plate this spring, slugging .711 in 47 plate appearances (get it?). No, I'm not suggesting he should become our latest cause, but there's something to be said for having a guy like Smith around as a utility player. Especially when your starting shortstop is Tony Pena Jr.
- If you haven't checked out Mellinger's blog recently, there are about four good recent posts worth reading, including an interesting look back at the Beltran trade. Supposedly, at one point Michael Young and Hank Blalock were on the table.
- Early tomorrow morning the new Royals Review will be born. Be afraid. I'll be sad to see this version of the site go. For better or worse, I've grown used to it. Honestly, I see positives and negatives to the new site design, but I'll ultimately defer to the professionals, who strongly believe in 2.0's merits. I do think that the comments and game threads will be better, if nothing else. I am less excited about the avatars and seemingly wasted space and additional clutter. Basically, I'm a words person and consider walls of text hot. If you are curious, check out just about any other SBN baseball blog, and you'll see the new format. I'll mention this again tomorrow, but I strongly encourage viewing the site in wide format.
- Bugs and Cranks looks at raising a daughter in Cardinals territory.

I'm sure the new RR will be better in some ways and we'll adapt.

you're really hating on huber lately dude
by FireBell on Mar 28, 2008 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions
Just a bit
As far as hating on him, the only reason I dislike him is because I've never seen a mediocre prospect so unbelievably overhyped. I have nothing against the guy; I'm sure he's a fine fellow and I wish him well. But he's just a mediocre prospect who managed worse PCL numbers than ultra-weak bat Timo Perez, and he can't play any position on the field. Every projection system sees him being worse than average. There is little reason to believe he'll be a decent major league hitter. Just thought I'd combat the prevailing irrational hype.

Gathright
2 more runs of Suppan, offense is efficient tonigh
steals don't mean much
Except that 12-12...
Though I agree, as long as Kendall is playing catcher, Joey should be running every time.

Every time Butler has swung the bat tonight
Oh no.
That's funny, my first thought was...
Just got here
I hope Yabuta isn't hurt too badly. But this is why pitching depth is a good thing. It's good when you have so much depth that a good pitcher has to be optioned to the minors. Now he may not have to be.

I hope they keep it up
DeJesus may miss opener

That's too bad
That said...
Just like possibly losing Yabuta for injury, this is another example of how far our depth has come. Gathright has had an even better spring the DDJ, and its going to be fun watching him get more playing time. Honestly, even if DDJ is healthy, Hillman probably still needs to find a way to Gathright in the lineup. I don't know if this means platooning with DDJ or Teahan, or moving Teahan to 1B, but if he can continue getting on base and stealing bases like he's done this spring, that speed is an incredible weapon.

Getting Gathright playing time
by Scott McKinney on Mar 28, 2008 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions
I think it's really important we figure out
They do need playing time
If Gathright can be a .380-400 OBP guy with 40-50 steals, he needs to play every day.
I don't know if I necessarily agree with this. If Gathright's numbers are .320/.390/.370 and DeJesus's numbers are .290/.365/440, I would definitely want DeJesus to play over Joey. And those numbers for Joey aren't nearly enough for him to unseat one of the corner OFers.

Yeah, but Gathright suddenly
Agreed
by Scott McKinney on Mar 28, 2008 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions
I'm with you on Teahen
I'd rather have Shealy show that he can continue to hit like he has this spring and handle first base duties, with Gload coming off the bench. Of course, this doesn't help Joey get on the field, because I agree, his offensive numbers aren't enough to push him past any of our starting OFs.
Just hate to see that speed being wasted on the pine, though. A guy like that gets on base, and it changes the way the pitcher and his defense behind him has to play. There's always the threat to steal, and suddenly a well-hit single is a scoring opportunity, so the defense really has to respect that and act with more urgency.

![Fresh on the heels of my award-winning 2008 Royals O-Swing Percentage Graph, here is a graph the O-Swing (percentage of pitches swung at outside of the strike zone) for all the teams of the AL Central from 2005-2008 by year, also compared to the MLB average. Remember -- this is for hitters, so lower is better.
(Maybe I [or someone else, of course] will do something like this for pitchers next week).
The results speak for themselvs, I guess, but they are saying all sorts of things. Discuss and enjoy!

Consider this a humble appendix to the "Secrets of the AL Central" series.
