Spring Training Game 8 Open Thread

The Royals battle the Diamondbacks today, at the usual time. Zach/k Grei/ienke will start.

If I was called in to name a professional sports team, I would follow two maxims: 1) no strange adjectives or concepts that don't have a clear singular/plural status ("Heat", "Jazz", etc) and always look strange when you have to do fancy things like, um, use the team name in a sentence and 2) no awkward or especially long names that will obviously be shortened by the lazy and unmotivated mass we call humanity. So "Diamondbacks" would have never made the cut. D-backs or D'backs (some weird Irish homage?) as it were is simply awful.

Awful.

Todays Royals Review Super Fun Question:

Why is Damon Hollins in camp?

A) More ex-Brave cronyism
B) Year spent with Yomiuri Giants seen as somehow useful or interesting (Hillman version)
C) Year spent with Yomiuri Giants seen as somehow useful or interesting (Nomo/Yabuta/Tsao [well he's actually from Taiwan, but lets play along] version)
D) His 15 HRs with Tampa Bay in 2006 showed that he can provide the power the lineup needs

Along those lines
Best and worst uniforms of the American League

One problem with mascots is we're starting to run out of animals. I'm kinda surprised no pro team has taken "Bulldogs", "Stallions", or "Dragons". They seem vicious enough. Instead we get names that make us scratch our head like "Heat", "Expos", and "Thrashers" which apparently is a bird.

The Diamondbacks have a new logo by the way:

Looks like a skateboard company logo.

What about...
...when teams move to another location?

Minneapolis Lakers makes perfect sense. LA Lakers? Not so much.

New Orleans Jazz? Ahh, very clever. Utah Jazz? Hmmm...do they know what jazz is there?

Vancouver Grizzlies? I get it, they are saying there are a lot of bears up there, right? Memphis Grizzlies. Bears everywhere are still scratching their heads at that one?

by Berroa is the devil on Mar 6, 2008 12:59 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

At least it's still connotes strength and ferocity
After all, what Tiger ot Lion ever lived free in Detroit, what Jaguar in Jacksonville, what Bear or Cub in Chicago?

But Laker makes no sense in L.A. except for alliteration, and Jazz in Utah none at all.

Chaim Mattis Keller New York City's # 1 Royals fan!

by cmkeller on Mar 6, 2008 1:43 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well...
There were historically bears in Illinois, but are now extinct there.  There used to be jaguars in Florida, but were hunted to extinction.  There are mountain lions in Michigan - not sure on the tigers though??? There are tiger salamaders in Michigan... sort doubt the connection there, though.

by KC Chris on Mar 6, 2008 2:04 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

There are bears in Tennessee-
but they are black bears, not grizzlies.

by loyal2s dad on Mar 6, 2008 1:46 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

There Probably Were
Grizzlies in Tennessee at one time; they just don't co-exist with people and farm animals very well, so they get wiped out wherever a lot of humans go.

Definitely
I always thought Utah should trade the name "Jazz" back to New Orleans and receive the name "Saints" which is perfect fit for Utah.

Still, there are a lot of teams that kept their nicknames after relocation that make no sense now---the "Lakers" started in Minnesota (Land of 10,000 Lakes); "Clippers" started in San Diego where one sees a helluva lot more clipper ships than LA.

There are no "Cardinals" in the desert where Arizona plays.

Any others I'm missing?

Damon Hollins is in camp
Because Allard did a poor job drafting and we have very few outfielders in the upper level of our minor leagues.

by NHZ on Mar 6, 2008 4:12 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hollins is here because Hillman loves OBP.
Oh wait, never mind.

Hollins is a fine fifth outfielder-type -- he can backup all three outfield slots, and hit an occasional home run.  But he is ill-suited to regular action because he makes outs at the same clip as TPJ.  Maybe with Guillen's suspension, he might squeeze out a few more days in the majors before heading down to Omaha or parts unknown.

by Gopherballs on Mar 6, 2008 1:16 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hollins is this year's Kerry Robinson
which means we can look forward to him completely losing a fly ball in the sun sometime in June.

I was running an errand during the 2nd;
and was able to listen.

Denny was commenting on how Greinke seemed to be content to just do his work; i.e., throw all of his pitches, just getting in his work, even if some weren't working yet. He was sorta alluding to this NOT being how Greinke would approach a regular season game.

I think this is exactly why NYRoyal says ST stats are meaningless.

To me, they might be meaningless for guys who are assured of making the team, but perhaps a bit more than that for guys trying to make the team. (Although facing guys "just getting in their work" could definitely skew their results as well)

by loyal2s dad on Mar 6, 2008 3:50 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That's exactly the problem with ST stats
To me, they might be meaningless for guys who are assured of making the team, but perhaps a bit more than that for guys trying to make the team. (Although facing guys "just getting in their work" could definitely skew their results as well)

You never know what the player was working on.  You don't know who he faced and what that player was working on.  All of these variables make those stats completely unreliable and, essentially meaningless.

I probably disagree with you.

more in these games. I think he has DH'd two games in a row now.

by MileHighKCfan on Mar 6, 2008 4:18 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It's either 1B or DH for Gload and Shealy
The Royals choice is basically an uninspiring combination at 1B or DH.  If Butler sticks at 1B it will be someone like Gload, Shealy or Huber at DH.  That means well below average production at one of those positions, regardless.
I probably disagree with you.

by philofthenorth on Mar 6, 2008 4:23 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'm pretty sure the answer is no
McClure has said that he sees Soria eventually becoming a starter.  But they aren't (and definitely should not) stretch him out to be a starter to start the season.  They could, however, stretch him out some after the ASB and give him some spot starts.
I probably disagree with you.

by philofthenorth on Mar 6, 2008 4:27 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He could be an almost full-time starter in 09
But it wouldn't be too hard to stretch him out enough to make some spot starts.  And quite frankly, if we want him to pitch 130+ innings in 09, we should really stretch him out to 100 innings this year.  If he has another 70 ip season, he won't be ready to be even a half-time starter in 09.
I probably disagree with you.

The "Tampa will be a contender" chatter
annoys me. For some reason the national media has jumped on that bandwagon but they're still very young and unproven, lack pitching depth outside of Kazmir-Shields-Garza and they posted the worst record in baseball last year.

Then again ppl are probably saying the same thing about our optimistic projection for the Royals to finish 3rd.

Nunez
Look, I know Tomko is probably OK as a 4th or 5th starter, but should a team like the Royals really risk putting a young arm like Nunez thru waivers?

I mean, Nunez does have some upside, especially compared to Tomko, right?

Everybody agree that to get where we want to go, some of the guys with upside need to be given a chance to develop?

Personally, I think Nunez HAS to make this team. The only sensible alternative, besides one of those fake injuries, would be to trade him. Problem with that is you don't always get full value for "upside", and if you're wrong, its a really bad setback for a low revenue team.

To be fair, I should add
this is the sort of problem created by neglecting your farm system so badly under the Glass regime. That's what forced Baird to use options on Nunez way sooner than he should have - the lack of organizational depth.

How long will we continue to pay for that pathetic 15 year ownership period of Glass (94-07)?

I'm giving him credit for changing his spendthrift ways now - but it looks like we aren't done paying a price for it yet!

Since Moore Already
Traded him once, I think that may be how it'll wind up. It seems Moore doesn't believe in him for whatever reason; maybe the post-Bradley-trade big league work he got last year and ST this year are to showcase him and increase his trade value. If so, SHHHHHHHH! Don't tell anyone.

I think that nixed Bradley trade is telling
Nunez obviously would not clear waivers, considering he could have brought a pretty decent player last year.

Perhaps he will be traded at the end of ST - that would be acceptable, assuming GMDM gets value for him.

I'd really like to see him stay
and Hoch go to Omaha for the start of the season. I know he has looked good so far this spring, but I would feel a lot more comfortable if he went down for half a year. Then we see if we can make a deal with Nunez this summer and bring Hoch up.
