Spring Training Game 8 Open Thread
The Royals battle the Diamondbacks today, at the usual time. Zach/k Grei/ienke will start.
If I was called in to name a professional sports team, I would follow two maxims: 1) no strange adjectives or concepts that don't have a clear singular/plural status ("Heat", "Jazz", etc) and always look strange when you have to do fancy things like, um, use the team name in a sentence and 2) no awkward or especially long names that will obviously be shortened by the lazy and unmotivated mass we call humanity. So "Diamondbacks" would have never made the cut. D-backs or D'backs (some weird Irish homage?) as it were is simply awful.
Awful.
Todays Royals Review Super Fun Question:
Why is Damon Hollins in camp?
A) More ex-Brave cronyism
B) Year spent with Yomiuri Giants seen as somehow useful or interesting (Hillman version)
C) Year spent with Yomiuri Giants seen as somehow useful or interesting (Nomo/Yabuta/Tsao [well he's actually from Taiwan, but lets play along] version)
D) His 15 HRs with Tampa Bay in 2006 showed that he can provide the power the lineup needs

Along those lines
One problem with mascots is we're starting to run out of animals. I'm kinda surprised no pro team has taken "Bulldogs", "Stallions", or "Dragons". They seem vicious enough. Instead we get names that make us scratch our head like "Heat", "Expos", and "Thrashers" which apparently is a bird.
The Diamondbacks have a new logo by the way:

Looks like a skateboard company logo.

What about...
Minneapolis Lakers makes perfect sense. LA Lakers? Not so much.
New Orleans Jazz? Ahh, very clever. Utah Jazz? Hmmm...do they know what jazz is there?
Vancouver Grizzlies? I get it, they are saying there are a lot of bears up there, right? Memphis Grizzlies. Bears everywhere are still scratching their heads at that one?

At least it's still connotes strength and ferocity
But Laker makes no sense in L.A. except for alliteration, and Jazz in Utah none at all.
Well...
Hope this works... sorry if it doesn't!

Definitely
Still, there are a lot of teams that kept their nicknames after relocation that make no sense now---the "Lakers" started in Minnesota (Land of 10,000 Lakes); "Clippers" started in San Diego where one sees a helluva lot more clipper ships than LA.
There are no "Cardinals" in the desert where Arizona plays.
Any others I'm missing?

Damon Hollins is in camp
Hollins is here because Hillman loves OBP.
Hollins is a fine fifth outfielder-type -- he can backup all three outfield slots, and hit an occasional home run. But he is ill-suited to regular action because he makes outs at the same clip as TPJ. Maybe with Guillen's suspension, he might squeeze out a few more days in the majors before heading down to Omaha or parts unknown.
Hollins is this year's Kerry Robinson
Hollins is a 5th OF guy or

Snyder double
I was running an errand during the 2nd;
Denny was commenting on how Greinke seemed to be content to just do his work; i.e., throw all of his pitches, just getting in his work, even if some weren't working yet. He was sorta alluding to this NOT being how Greinke would approach a regular season game.
I think this is exactly why NYRoyal says ST stats are meaningless.
To me, they might be meaningless for guys who are assured of making the team, but perhaps a bit more than that for guys trying to make the team. (Although facing guys "just getting in their work" could definitely skew their results as well)
by loyal2s dad on Mar 6, 2008 3:50 PM EST reply actions
That's exactly the problem with ST stats
You never know what the player was working on. You don't know who he faced and what that player was working on. All of these variables make those stats completely unreliable and, essentially meaningless.

I'm beginning to think
Nunez
I mean, Nunez does have some upside, especially compared to Tomko, right?
Everybody agree that to get where we want to go, some of the guys with upside need to be given a chance to develop?
Personally, I think Nunez HAS to make this team. The only sensible alternative, besides one of those fake injuries, would be to trade him. Problem with that is you don't always get full value for "upside", and if you're wrong, its a really bad setback for a low revenue team.
