"Alex expressed a lack of comfort at third and it was affecting his offense." -- Dayton Moore, when asked about Alex's move to left field. The quote's a little ambiguous, but seems to imply that Gordon got moved off third at least in part because of his own lack of comfort fielding the position. Apologies if this was already posted somewhere.

Rany on the Radio

"Everybody thought we had the greatest offseason in the history of whatever and people in the game...

"Everybody thought we had the greatest offseason in the history of whatever and people in the game were saying we did as good as anybody in improving the team." Everybody thought. Greatest offseason. History. Let’s ignore the part about how "people in the game" said the Royals "did as good as anybody in improving the team." This very well may be true. I mean, let’s say there was a guy in your fantasy league who has sucked year after year, whose draft strategy ossified in 1985 and who thinks that Joe Saunders is a first-round pick because he’s won 16 games each of the last two years. If that guy was tired of getting beaten up year after year, and was thinking of leaving the league – or worse, he was thinking about learning what all this hullabaloo about "sabermetrics" and "Moneyball" was about, and asked you for advice, what would you tell him? If you wouldn’t be tempted to pat him on the back and give him a few "attaboys" and tell him that he’s doing great and eventually his luck has to turn, well, you’re a better man than I. So if Billy Beane or Kenny Williams told Dayton Moore that hey, we love what you did with your roster, and that Mike Jacobs is going to be a huge addition to your lineup and Kyle Farnsworth could be a force in your bullpen, well…let he who wouldn’t have done the same thing in their shoes throw the first stone. I’m fresh out.

Top Five Reasons to Love the Rick Ankiel Signing

34
  1. Ankiel combines the outfield defense of Scott Podsednik with the plate approach of Mike Jacobs.
  2. He's the best free agent pitcher Dayton Moore has signed in two years.
  3. Kansas City now holds the record for most free agent outfielders acquired in one offseason without improving on Mitch Maier,.
  4. A 30-something right fielder who has been connected with HGH and is a bit of a headcase? What could possibly go wrong?
  5. Since Rany Jazayerli really wanted the Royals to sign Ankiel, this obviously paves the way for a tearful, on-air reconciliation with Dayton on the first "Rany on the Radio" of the 2010 season.

Rany's Catching Up with the Rest of Us

Good for him... he even uses the phrase "it isn't fun anymore." [(c) Will McDonald] That's not to say I'm glad he's done writing for the season -- that sucks, and I'll miss him. But at least now he's where many of were at last offseason regarding Dayton Moore's "abillities." The increasing stories of inability to handle criticism are depressing and predictable. I urge any media members who happen to be reading this to continue pushing the boundaries as far as you can without getting "banned." Remember -- you could be next. No matter how many vision-challenged and "locker room leaders" Dayton Moore drafts, this teams will never legitimately compete until a new GM is in. I can't speak for anyone else, but I don't want to wait a season, or even a day longer. I've "watched this guy GM everyday." He sucks. As NYRoyal said, "Next."

I'm still trying to get my brain around this. I mean, the Royals organization obviously reads Rany, or else they wouldn't have gotten mad at what he wrote. However, if they do read Rany, surely they realize that he's one of the best fans in the history of fandom. For years and years he has been optimistic about the Royals, giving them way more benefit of the doubt than they were probably ever entitled. No, it's never been blind faith -- Rany is not some mindless fanboy -- but he has long avoided the cynicism and hopelessness that tends to take over your more critically-minded followers of historically poor performing teams. More importantly, Rany is one of the team's most high-profile fans. In that capacity he gives voice to what many thousands of fans are thinking.... Call him a sonofabitch in the privacy of the team office and make it clear to anyone who matters (i.e. the trainer Rany went after) that he has the team's support and no one cares what this blogger thinks.... But they didn't do that. They got defensive and pissy in a very public way. And by doing that, the Royals sent a signal to an important segment of their fan base -- the plugged-in segment -- that they can't tolerate reasoned criticism. And if one can't tolerate reasoned criticism, one isn't going to act on it. Which raises the question: In light of this, why on Earth would anyone with a brain continue to be a Royals fan?

Shysterball.

Rany Sort of Endorses the "Kougar"

16

Rany, I'm a regular reader and fan of yours. I'm not going to pretend that I have the same relationship with Kauffman thay many do. But this semi-endorsement of Sam Mellinger's "Kougar" nickname for Kauffman Stadium is horrifying. It's worse than Mellinger's "GREAT!" verdict on the Jose Guillen contract last June. Worse than you using FRAA do evaluate Alex Gordon's defense. Worse than all the "Should we resign Kyle Davies?" blogs after his first two starts this season. Worse than you trying to start nicknames last year, us beating you to the punch, then you saying they didn't "grab" you as if you were the judge of what was appropriate for nicknaming. Then again, who am I do judge a guy who still pimps Pythagenport long after its creator has disowned it? If I had any idea what it meant, I'd say it is very close to being "on."

But Soria’s injury changes the narrative, from "our manager is actively costing our team a chance at the playoffs" to "our manager has made some bad decisions along with some good decisions, and overall he’s neither an asset nor a liability."

Old news here. Rany on how Soria's injury changes the evaluation of Hillman. Rany and I agree that Hillman is a middle of the road manager.
