Royals Communnity Playing Time Forecasts

Not sure if this link has been posted here or not, but either way, Tom Tango, who has done so much for the serious baseball fan community on the internet, wants your help projecting playing time for every MLB team. This is separate from the FanGraphs Fan Projections, this is just playing time. Please go fill this out -- it took me less than 5 minutes.

Watching Yuni Play Everyday: Tango on UZR, Betancourt, and the Fans Scouting Report

Commenting on R. J. Anderson's response to Dayton Moore's comments on Betancourt and defensive metrics, Tango agrees:: "I do NOT believe in UZR trends. I DO believe in Fans’ Scouting Report trends. Without the Fans’, you look at the +2, +1, -1, -13, and see that someone who was a bit lucky his first three years, and very unlucky last year. With the Fans, that -13 is scary looking." If Tango is so smart, he'd be working for a baseball team! What's that?

Is Dayton Moore the Bravest GM in Baseball, or the Bavasi-est? Miscellanea in the Betancourt Aftermath

You can find my "objective" analysis of the Betancourt trade at Driveline Mechanics (it also covers the Francoeur-Church trade, which is actually probably even awesomer). At Driveline, I pretend to...

[Ryan Langerhans is] 29, has about 1200 PA (two full seasons), his career wOBA is .314 (-7 per 150 G), and his UZR at a "neutral" position is +7 per 150 G. That’s a league average performance. MLB average. It’s sad for him that he’s been given a short shrift for so long. Willie Bloomquist, your typical white guy who scratches and claws his way into a lineup, is a barely above replacement level player, who has over 1600 PA in MLB, and has been around since 2002. The difference? He throws with his right hand, which means he gets to play the infield. Mom & Dad, whatever you do, make your son throw with his right hand (and bat with his left). If he insists on throwing with his left hand, make sure he practices his hitting alot or works on his control as a pitcher.

So What is FIP Anyway?

A summary of FIP - Fielding Independent Pitching - a new baseball stat.

Cliff Floyd is all about heart, determination, and grit.... Cliff Floyd is forecast to be a league average hitter. And a league average hitter who cannot (or is not expected to) play the field is the very definition of a replacement-level player. Indeed, the GM of the Padres agrees with this assessment, as his stated role is also the very definition of replacement-level player. That replacement-level player, with ordinary heart and determination, will cost you 400,000$. Cliff Floyd however is going to cost 750,000$. When people say that you can’t measure the intangibles, remind them that those intangibles are being paid for with tangible dollars. And the value of those intangibles, as determined by MLB, is $350,000. If it was worth more, then some team would have paid more. They didn’t."

They should have named it willie O' Bloomquist Average

I finally published another highly anticipated article on quantifying the "Little Things" at Driveline... Features my usual Mechian efficiency in getting to the point, but if you want to understand this spreadsheet I've linked here, you should at least take a look at it... That's right, Jose Guillen really did do something. That's what he's getting 3/36 for -- not getting on base, or playing defense, or being able to hit right-handed pitching, but doing the "Little Things." Royal #2 is shocking, but maybe not so much when you think about what this stat means. I actually did the Royals calculations a while before I started writing for Driveline, and it turned into this... which ended up a lot longer and more inconclusive than I had hoped, but maybe it will go somewhere. I hope that if you find it interesting, you'll discuss the conceptual side of things over there, although I'm willing to learn here, too. If nothing else, it prominently features a classic example from the late 70s-early 80s Royals dynasty. And just for the record: +0.43 -0.03 +0.06 Figure it out.

The Battle for Grass Creek continues to slide the other way. But hey, we have Jose Guillen!
