Out of Options Players From Around the Majors

As mentioned in the recent Davies thread, the Royals should keep an eye on other teams' players who are out of options, as they may become available in trade or on waivers before final rosters are...

With too many outfielders and a full 40-man roster, the Rockies have designated corner outfielder Matt Murton for assignment. While no future star, Matt Murton is a nice player who can hit for average, take a walk, avoid strikeouts, hit the ball in the gaps, and play an average to slighly above average corner outfield. A right-handed hitter, he has mashed LHP (career: 306/374/483, 857 OPS) while holding his own against RHP (career: 276/340/412, 752 OPS). Only 27, he is under club control for four more years (although he may qualify for arbitration next year as a Super 2). There is not a lot of upside, but with regular playing time, he could be a league average (~2.0 WAR) player -- maybe a little more with an age 27-29 peak bump -- for near the league minimum. At the very least, he would make a very good fourth outfielder, especially for a team with two left-handed hitters starting in the corners (like say David DeJesus and Mark Teahen). And yes, a right-handed (and cheaper) Mark Teahen is a fair comparison. This would be a little move, but one that could push the Royals back in a positive direction at little cost.

Mark Ellis: The Dream is Over

+

Beyond the Box Score has been making a big deal about Mark Ellis all week, and this weekend, Billy Beane reportedly resigned Ellis for a two-year deal reported to be be between $10-$11 million, with an option for a third year that would bring the whole deal to $18 million. I guess this spares everyone another big, stupid post from me on Hudson vs. Furcal vs. Ellis, where I show that they're all worth about the same, given offense, defense, age, position, and recent injuries, and that Ellis will end up being the biggest bargain. (Yes, Orlando Hudson just called his agent to tell him exactly which entrance the dump truck full of money should use). In short, I believe that this shows why Billy Beane is still the best GM in baseball -- he's not just avoiding overpaying, he's underpaying, getting one of the best not-Utley, non-Pedroia 2Bs in baseball, who's been 3.5 -4 wins above average for the past three years, every bit the equal of Orlando Hudson and Rafael Furcal except a year older and in the more difficult league, for the money of a 1.5-2 WAR (or just below average) 2B. And if Ellis has a serious decline, they aren't out that much money because the deal is relatively small (11 million over 2 years is about the market rate for a 1-1.5 WAR player) and incentive laden, they aren't out that much. Then again, we already knew this from, um, other comparative signings that he made, which I will not mention here because we all know about them. Color me envious. Dayton, are you taking notes? No, seriously, stop arguing with Jin Wong about VORP vs. Super Linear Weights and check this out!
