This from Bob Dutton of the KC Star:
SURPRISE, Ariz. | Royals reliever Joe Nelson expects to miss two or three months after learning Thursday he needs to undergo surgery on his right shoulder to correct an injured labrum.
"It's not major," he said. "It's just a flap in there they need to trim or something. It's frustrating, though."
Nelson, 32, speaks from experience gleaned through a history of labrum problems. He missed most of most of 2002 and all of 2003 after undergoing two major surgeries.
"I've torn my labrum before," he said. "So I know what that feels like. I couldn't even play catch. With this, it's just a matter than I couldn't get a good downward plane when pitching from the mound.
"I don't think this (injury) is related to the problems I had in the past."
Surgery should be scheduled within a few days.
"It hurts us," manager Buddy Bell said. "He was a candidate for our bullpen."
Rest of story here.
I guess that opens up a spot in the bullpen the unfortunate way. Tough break for Nelson. He spent a long time in the minors to make it to this point. Let's hope his surgery and rehab go well and he is back helping the club by the all-star break.
