My sense is that nationalism and various stripes of monarchism and absolutism are closely intertwined, save for a few countries that have cultivated a strong republican mythology, like France. Imagine that as a way of addressing this problem and encouraging further discussion upon the subject, Major League Baseball had the Royals and Nationals play a 162 game mega-series. Who would prevail in 2012?

Notice that the Nationals have lots of former Royals lying around.

Nationals in a box: 2011 Record: 80-81, Key additions: Mitch Atkins, Andres Blanco, Brett Carroll, Dan Cortes, Mark DeRosa, Chad Durbin, Jeff Fulchino, Gio Gonzalez, Edwin Jackson, Brad Lidge, Mark Teahen, Key Losses: Collin Balester, Todd Coffey, Alex Cora, Jonny Gomes, Livan Hernandez, Tom Milone, Layyyyynce Nix, Ivan Rodriguez, Matt Stairs
