Does Dayton Moore Make Enough Trades?

"If only I had more currency....."
"If only I had more currency....."

When Dayton Moore was first hired, we were excited at the prospect of re-making this franchise. We were so tired of the losing, so tired of seeing the same old rejects over again - Emil Brown, Mark Teahan, Scott Elarton, ugh. Dayton Moore would come in and shake things up. He would trade everything that wasn't bolted to the floor, and bring in his own winning players.

Has that happened?

In his first two months of the job, Dayton Moore made seven trades, acquiring twelve players. Only the Phillies made more trades in that time (eight), and no team in baseball acquired more players through trades over that time. Not that surprising considering Dayton had just gotten the job and wanted to clear out the roster and bring in his kind of players.

The players ranged from promising AAA players (Joey Gathright), to older minor league vets (Ryan Shealy), oft-injured pitchers (Jorge de la Rosa) and expensive reclamation projects (Odalis Perez). None of the acquired players were solid prospects (aside from pitcher Dan Cortes) however, and none ultimately became impact players, although Jorge de la Rosa was useful once he left Kansas City (although again oft-injured). In his first twelve months on the job, Dayton Moore made twelve trades, acquiring seventeen players, equaled only in baseball by Cincinnati.

Here is a complete list of every Dayton Moore "player-for-player" trade (not counting player acquisitions for cash).

A few observations:

  • This is a quantitative study (and a pretty simplistic one at that), not a qualitative study. We'd all be fine with it if Dayton only made one trade a year so long as it was an awesome trade. Some of the teams that have made the fewest trades have actually been among the most successful, although its perhaps because of their success they have not felt the need to make many trades.
  • Since it is quantitative, all trades are created equal, meaning the Russ Haltiwanger deal counts as much as the Zack Greinke deal (except in terms of players acquired)
  • I would like to do a more qualitative study, perhaps this fall, examining the value in players acquired and traded away. However, just eyeballing it, it appears as if the only significant trade in Dayton’s six years is the Zack Greinke deal. While I love Alcides Escobar, if he’s the best player you have acquired in a trade in six years, you may not be doing a great job as a General Manager.
  • What is missing from Dayton’s column is any kind of unearthed gem acquired in a trade. Cleveland landed Shin Soo Choo, Tampa Bay landed Ben Zobrist, Toronto landed Jose Bautista, all through trades of insignificant pieces. The cupboard may have been bare for Dayton when he arrived in Kansas City, but that is not a prerequisite for being able to land quality players.
  • In fairness to Dayton however, the vets he inherited had little trade value, and the youngsters he had (Butler, Greinke, Gordon) are the kind of guys you want to build around. When he did deal Greinke, he appeared to get a pretty good deal for him, however he mis-timed the market for some of his other useful assets like David DeJesus, Joakim Soria, and possibly Gil Meche, Albero Callaspo, Mike Aviles and Leo Nunez as well.
