Cactus League Game 24 - Open Thread

Luis Mendoza looks to stake claim to the fifth starter spot in an afternoon classic versus the White Sox.

Jennifer Hilderbrand-USA TODAY Sports

Yesterday, despite 'feeling the best arm-wise all spring', Bruce Chen was absolutely, positively lit up. As this game was on WGN, we were all treated to a 92 pitch death march as Chen surrendered five home runs in five innings: two to twenty year old Javier Baez. Aaron Crow, by the way, was no great shakes in relief, either.

We also got a look at Johnny Giavotella at second (an error), Christian Colon at short (not much range - albeit on just a couple of chances), David Lough in right (bad route, but still smoking the ball) and Jarrod Dyson in center (airmailed a throw to the plate as badly as I have ever seen at any level). Basically, it was not a great day for Royals.

Moving on, the lineup for today:

  • Alex Gordon, LF
  • Chris Getz, 2B
  • Eric Hosmer, 1B
  • Billy Butler, DH
  • Lorenzo Cain, CF
  • Jeff Francoeur, RF
  • Elliot Johnson, 3B
  • George Kotteras, C
  • Brandon Wood, SS
  • Luis Mendoza starts, with J.C. Gutierrez, Dan Wheeler, Nate Adcock, Blaine Boyer and Greg Holland.
Some of you wondered if Brandon Wood can play shortstop, here's your chance. After boxing it around at third a couple of days ago, color me skeptical.

James Shields is throwing in a minor league game today, in part to not let the White Sox (who will face him Opening Day) get a look at him.

Alcides Escobar is also scheduled to play three innings in a minor league game today as well.
