Know a (Potential) Future Royal: Trey Ball

The Info:

Position: LHP/OF
Height: 6-6
Weight: 175
Bats/Throws: L-L
Birthdate:June 27, 1994
School: Newcastle HS (IN) and has a commitment to Texas

The Tools:

FB Velocity:

Windup - 50/60 High – 95, Low – 87, Average 91-92

Stretch - 50/60 High – 94, Low 87, Average 91-92

FB Movement: 50/50

Good fastball. Velocity keeps it from being a better pitch, but his frame projects that he'll add some speed to it.

Curveball: 40-60

Below average pitch. Didn't throw it much in school and is still learning the ropes of it. Could be a good pitch eventually, but right now he needs to learn how to throw it and be confident in it.

Changeup: 45-60

His best offspeed offering. Good deception with arm angle makes it look like a fastball coming out of his hand. Good command on it. Plus projection with it and could be as good as his fastball.

Control: 50-65

Pounds and pounds the zone. Has great control with the fastball and changeup. If the curveball comes along then it'll be outstanding. Control is a plus tool for him.

Command: 30-55

Control is good but his command lags very far behind. Elevates the fastball and can't command the curve at all. Has great mechanics and repeats them easily so the command problems should fix themselves and profile for good down the line.

The Ranking:

Overall: Would be a Top-10 prospect for the Royals.

Pitcher: Would be the 3rd or 4th best pitching prospect for the Royals behind Zimmer and Ventura for sure and then most likely behind Kyle Smith.

The Comp: Ross Detwiler

The Draft: Best two way player in the draft. Teams could contemplate taking him as an outfielder, but he's grown so much and shined as a pitcher teams would be foolish to not give him that chance. He's a prep arm and is raw so he's an investment pick and won't yield returns soon. Will likely go Top 10 but could fall to Top 15.
