The Kansas City Royals added another utility infielder to the fold today, because you simply cannot have enough of them. Pedro Ciriaco was brought onboard after being waived by the Padres.
Ciriaco is 27 and has played pretty much everywhere but catcher. His major league career line (in 158 games spread over 4 seasons) is .279/.310/.388. That feels very Royals-like to me. The right-handed batting infielder brings some decent speed and had an okay 2012 season playing for Boston.
Over an 815 game-8 year stretch in the minors, Pedro has a similar .272/.299/.357 line. He has never walked more than 32 times - and that was in 600 plate appearances - in the minors. He was hitting .238/.284/333 for the Padres in limited action before being given his walking papers.
A corresponding roster move must be made by Friday as Ciriaco is out of options.
