Salvador Perez injury: Royals place C on 7-day DL, Wade Davis on daily emergency leave

Perez underwent concussion tests at a hospital last night, but the Royals believe the catcher has a "slight" concussion

The Kansas City Royals made a pair of moves Sunday, placing Salvador Perez on the 7-day DL with a "slight" low-grade (h/t to thelaundry) concussion and putting Wade Davis on MLB daily emergency leave, reports Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star.

Perez spent last night in the hospital undergoing concussion tests. The injury doesn't sound too serious, as far as concussions go, but brain injuries are always scary.

Davis' family emergency involves a brother, according to Dutton. Davis will miss a minimum of three days and a maximum of seven, putting his next start in jeopardy. Davis is scheduled to pitch on Wednesday against the Minnesota Twins.

The Royals recalled LHP Will Smith and C Brett Hayes from Triple-A to replace Davis and Perez on the 25-man roster. Smith has spent some time with the big league club this season, posting a 3.86 ERA in one start and five appearances out of the bullpen. The southpaw has racked up impressive strikeout numbers in AAA, and could potentially out-pitch Davis if given the opportunity.

Hayes battled with George Kottaras for the backup catcher role during spring training. Kansas City chose to call up Adam Moore instead of Hayes earlier this season when Perez missed time with a family emergency, but Moore is currently on the DL. Hayes has hit .231/.280/.441 in Triple-A this year.
