Alcides Escobar sent Tim Hudson's first pitch rocketing into the wall in the right field corner and crossed the plate two hitters later after Alex Gordon and Lorenzo Cain each managed productive outs.

The Royals squandered two runners with no outs after Mike Moustakas singled and Omar Infante drew a bases-loaded walk, but Salvador Perez lined out hard, and Jarrod Dyson grounded into a double play to end the inning.

Jeremy Guthrie cruised through a perfect first, but in the second the Giants got a one-out infield single from Hunter Pence, who reached safely after Escobar had to transition into a barehanded play on the fly and missed his mark just a bit on the throw to first. Pence promptly ran into an out getting caught stealing by a perfect throw from Perez, but Belt reached a couple pitches later to keep Guthrie from facing the minimum through two. Travis Ishikawa lined a screamer to right, but Cain read it perfectly for his second nice play of the evening.

The Royals managed no offense in the top of the third, in an easy 1-2-3 top of the third for Tim Hudson.

Royals lead 1 - 0 heading to the bottom of the third inning.
