Clinging to a slim 1 - 0 lead, the Royals and Giants both seemed outmatched by the opposing starter. Guthrie and Hudson each retired more than 10 batters in a row.
The Royals added a second run in the top of the sixth when Alcides Escobar led off with a single and was driven in by Alex Gordon when he lined a double to center. Two batters later, Eric Hosmer collected his first hit of the series, a single to center that plated the third Royals run.
In the bottom of the sixth, Brandon Crawford ended Guthrie's run of BABIP good fortune with a grounder that found the gap between Hosmer and Omar Infante. With the pitcher's spot in the order up next, Michael Morse pinch-hit and crushed an 0-2 offering into the upper deck, but the wind took it well foul. Morse ended up settling for a double past the bag and a diving Mike Moustakas at third, scoring the first Giant run.
That was the end of Guthrie's night, as he gave way to Kelvin Herrera. Herrera walked Gregor Blanco before inducing a routine ground out from the bat of Joe Panik. Buster Posey grounded out to Omar Infante for plate Gregor Blanco, trimming the Royals' lead to 3 - 2.
