The Royals wrapped up their trip to the land of beer and sausage by finalizing their Opening Day active roster for the first game in Detroit on Monday. The club assigned infielder Jason Donald to AAA Omaha and placed pitchers Louis Coleman and Luke Hochevar on the 15 day disabled list (Hochevar cannot be put on the 60 day disabled list and off the 40 man roster until they have a player to replace him on the 40 man roster). The team decided to keep a middle infielder and Danny Valencia, meaning they will have fourteen position players and just eleven pitchers, a rarity in today's modern roster construction.
Here is your Opening Day Roster:
Catchers: Salvador Perez, Brett Hayes
Infielders: Billy Butler, Pedro Ciriaco, Alcides Escobar, Eric Hosmer, Omar Infante, Mike Moustakas, Danny Valencia
Outfielders: Norichika Aoki, Lorenzo Cain, Jarrod Dyson, Alex Gordon, Justin Maxwell
Starting Pitchers: Bruce Chen, Jeremy Guthrie, James Shields, Jason Vargas, Yordano Ventura
Relief Pitchers: Francisley Bueno, Tim Collins, Aaron Crow, Wade Davis, Kelvin Herrera, Greg Holland
Infante, who has been battling a shoulder injury most of camp and did not make the trip to Milwaukee, is said to be ready to go for Opening Day. Asked if Infante would be ready for everyday action, Manager Ned Yost responded icily:
"I’m not a mind reader," Yost said. "I’m not a fortune teller. I don’t know. We’ll go day to day, see how he feels, and go from there."
So don't go to Ned Yost inquiring about your future love life. He's not a mind reader. He does not use tarot cards. He is not a soothsayer.
