Major League Baseball announced it has suspended Royals pitcher Kelvin Herrera five games for throwing behind Athletics third baseman Brett Lawrie in Sunday's game, and fined him an undisclosed amount of money. MLB states it is suspending Herrera for "intentionally throwing a pitch in the head area of Brett Lawrie, with warnings in place." MLB considers the upper third of the body as the "head area." Herrera's suspension will begin immediately unless appealed.
Yordano Ventura was fined an undisclosed amount of money for hitting Brett Lawrie on Saturday, but will receive no suspension.
Herrera is the first pitcher to be suspended for throwing at a hitter since (EDIT) Brandon Workman threw at Evan Longoria in 2014.
