On July 22nd, the Royals won 7-1 at the White Sox (Chen!!) and from that point on they were 52-27 for the rest of the season, including the playoffs. That's 79 games. They lost the previous two in that streak, so over the final 81 games the Royals were 52-29.
There have been 7,373 games in franchise history between 1969 and Game 7.
In that span, there have been 143 times that the boys were sitting on a record of 52-29 or better in an 81 game span.
The best 81 game record was in 1977, when they were 61-20 after sweeping a September 25th double header at the Angels. That's the only time in franchise history the Royals won 61/81 games. If any of you are unaware of the ridiculous run the Royals went on late in 1977, allow me a brief recap:
June 16, 1977: 28-31, 5th place, 7 games behind.
September 25, 1977: 99-55, 1st place, up 10.5 games.
This ridiculous 71-27 streak included a 35-4 stretch, and a franchise record 16 game winning streak. This team went on to win a franchise-best 102 games. They were pretty good at baseball.
Here are the next best records in any 81 game stretch in franchise history:
60-21 5 times, all in 1977
59-22 11 times, 7 in 1977 and 4 in 1978
58-23 17 times, 12 in 1977 and 5 in 1978
57-24 10 times, 3 in 1977 and 7 in 1978
56-25 14 times, 3 in 1977, 8 in 1978, and 3 in 1980
55-26 19 times, 2 in 1977, 8 in 1978, and 9 in 1980
54-27 15 times, 2 in 1977, 1 in 1978, and 12 in 1980
53-28 20 times, 2 in 1976, 7 in 1977, 5 in 1978, and 6 in 1980
And finally, the Royals have been 52-29 33 times. 14 in 1976, 4 in 1977, 3 in 1978, 8 in 1980... and 4 times in 2014.
I think we all already knew that this current team is playing better than any team to don the Crown since 1980. And really, outside of a ridiculous stretch in 1977, this is basically the best that this team has played over a three month stretch of games.
For whatever that's worth.
