Royals prospects Cheslor Cuthbert and Raul Mondesi have been named to the Futures Game to be played July 12 in Cincinnati during All-Star week. Both will play on the World roster.
The nineteen-year old Mondesi, who was actually born in Los Angeles while his father was a Major Leaguer, but was signed at age 16 as an international free agent after living in the Dominican Republic. The shortstop is considered the Royals best hitting prospect and was named the #28 prospect in baseball by Baseball America this pre-season. He is hitting .270/.289/.426 with 4 HR 18 RBI in 125 plate appearances for AA Northwest Arkansas after missing some time with back injuries.
The Nicaraguan-born Cuthbert was named a Top 100 prospect by Baseball America before the 2012 season, but has slid off prospect radars since then. Primarily a third baseman, he has begun to learn other positions in an attempt to increase his value. The 22-year old is hitting .268/.333/.413 with 8 HR 32 RBI in 283 plate appearances for AAA Omaha.
Kyle Zimmer's brother Bradley, an outfielder in the Indians system, will represent the United States in the game.
