Wade Davis and Kelvin Herrera have been named to the American League All-Star team as reserves, as complete rosters were announced on Monday. Mike Moustakas was selected to be part of the fan vote for the final roster spot. That gives the Royals six All-Stars, seven if Moustakas is voted in. It is the most All-Stars in franchise history on one team, besting the five players the Royals sent in 1982 (George Brett, Frank White, Hal McRae, Willie Wilson, and Dan Quisenberry).
It will be the first All-Star appearance for all Davis and Herrera, as well as Moustakas should he make it.. The 29-year old Davis is having a ridiculous season out of the bullpen this year, allowing just one run all season in 36 innings of work for a microscopic ERA of 0.25. Davis has the best ERA among all relievers with at least 25 innings of work and is fifth in the league among relievers with 1.1 fWAR. He already has a career-high nine saves and has struck out 10 hitters per-nine innings.
Kelvin Herrera was selected by manager Ned Yost, which makes sense because he is a bit of a curious selection. Herrera is having a fine season with a 2.20 ERA in 32 2/3 innings, but his ERA ranks 12th among relievers with at least 25 innings pitched, 21st in FIP, 26th in fWAR and 26th in strikeouts-per-nine innings. Herrera did finish with a 1.41 ERA in 2014, the third-best among all American League relievers.
Mike Moustakas will be one of five candidates in the "Final Vote" to be determined by online voting (so #votemoustakas). The 26-year old is having a career season, hitting .301/.357/.437 with 7 HR 31 RBI. His 2.2 fWAR is 24th in the league. Other Final Vote candidates include Detroit's Yoenis Cespedes, Boston's Xander Bogaerts, Minnesota's Brian Dozier, and New York's Brett Gardner.
EDIT: You can vote for Mike Moustakas here, or you can tweet using the hashtag #VoteMoose to have that counted in voting as well.
