Alex Gordon has been nominated for the Roberto Clemente Award which recognizes the contribution made by players who best represent the game "through positive contributions on and off the field, including sportsmanship and community involvement." Each team nominates one player for the award. Beginning today, Roberto Clemente Day, fans can vote on the winner at ChevyBaseball.com today where they can also win a shot at free tickets to the 2015 World Series. Voting ends October 9th.
Alex Gordon was honored this past winter as the winner of the Fred Hutchinson Award for his work off the field. Alex has helped raise more than $1 million for pediatric cancer research through the nonprofit Alex’s Lemonade Stand, a foundation inspired by cancer patient Alexandra "Alex" Scott. Alex also supports the Lincoln Diamond Dawgs, a 12-and-under baseball team from Lincoln, Nebraska that raises awareness and funds for the American Cancer Society.
Jimmy Rollins won the Roberto Clemente Award last year. Since the beginning of the award in 1971, no Royals player has ever won the award. Eric Hosmer was the Royals' nominee last season. Alex Gordon was nominated back in 2012.
Roberto Clemente was a fifteen-time All-Star for the Pittsburgh Pirates who collected 3,000 hits, 240 home runs, an was named 1966 National League MVP.
