The Royals have signed veteran left-hander Joe Beimel to a minor league deal. The signing came after an examination of his elbow from an MRI, according to Yahoo! Sports reporter Tim Brown. The 39-year old had a workout for the Cubs and had a deal with the Marlins that fell through this season. Beimel made 53 appearances with the Seattle Mariners last season, posting a 3.99 ERA (5.48 FIP) in 47 1/3 innings with 4.2 strikeouts-per-nine innings and 3.0 walks-per-nine innings. Lefties hit .280/.345/.480 against him in 85 plate appearances last year.

Beimel is a 13-year veteran with the Pirates, Twins, Devil Rays, Dodgers, Nationals, Rockies, and Mariners. He has a lifetime 4.06 ERA, almost exclusively as a reliever. Beimel had Tommy John surgery in 2012 and missed all of that season and most of 2013.
