The Royals have set rosters for their two short-season rookie ball teams in Idaho Falls, Idaho, which began play last weekend, and Burlington, North Carolina, which begins play tonight. The Idaho Falls Chukars play in the Pioneer League, an advanced rookie league, and are managed by Justin Gemoll, assisted by former Royals pitcher Jeff Suppan and former Royals hitting coach Andre David.
The Chukars lineup is headlined by shortstop Ricky Aracena, an 18-year old the Royals signed for $850,000 in 2014 out of the Dominican Republic. Also on the roster is Colombian catcher Meibrys Viloria, who the Royals signed for $460,000 in 2015. Joining in the international flair is third baseman Ryan Dale, signed as a teenager out of Australia by the Royals in 2012. The outfield features 2015 draft picks Tanner Stanley, out of the University of Richmond, and Luke Willis, out of George Mason University. Catcher Colton Frabasilio, out of St. Louis University, a 2015 draft pick, and 2016 draft pick Nick Heath, a Junction City native drafted out of Northwestern State University will also be in the lineup. Lee's Summit North High School grad Brandon Dulin is also on the roster recovering from an injury.
The Chukars pitching staff features 2015 draft picks like Alex Luna, Matt Portland, Brian Bayliss, and Drew Milligan. Cole Way, a 6'11' 2014 draft pick who punted at the University of Tulsa, and did not play baseball, will also be on the pitching staff. Reid Redman, who was acquired from the Marlins with Brian Flynn in exchange for Aaron Crow, will also be on the roster, recovering from Tommy John surgery.
