As you might have determined, Alex Gordon hit a home run. It was a no-doubt moonshot to center field. But, more importantly, Gordon scored the game-tying run in the bottom of the eighth inning. And even more importantly, Mike Moustakas crushed his 15th home run of the year, another moonshot of the walkoff variety to clinch an exciting victory.

The setup: the Royals were down 7-3. The Houston Astros had scored their septet of runs off rookie starter Jake Junis, who was taking the place of the injured Nate Karns in the rotation. However, much credit should be given to the Royals’ bullpen: Kevin McCarthy, Travis Wood, and Mike Minor pitched 5.1 scoreless innings to get the Royals through the rest of the game.

In the bottom of the eighth, Eric Hosmer struck out swinging, lowering the Royals to five available outs to give. However, Salvador Perez blooped a single into shallow right-center field, Mike Moustakas shot a hard grounder that barely stayed fair, and Cheslor Cuthbert blooped another looper just past the infield to score Perez. Gordon came to the plate after an Alcides Escobar strikeout, walking to load the bases for Whit Merrifield. Merrifield promptly cracked a double into left field off Houston closer Ken Giles, clearing the bases. Gordon stumbled into the plate in a bizarre half-slide, but it counted nonetheless.

Then the bottom of the ninth happened. With two outs, Perez took advantage of an extreme defensive shift to get onto first base. Then Moustakas happened. He hit one of those home runs where you just know as soon as you hear the crack of the bat. The Royals ended up with a thrilling 9-7 victory over the best team in baseball. They did it all without #eskymagic.

Tomorrow, the Royals play the Astros again in the third game of the four-game series.
