The Royals travel to sunny San Diego to take on the Padres this weekend. The Padres currently own the second-worst record in baseball, and are without the services of Manuel Margot, Trevor Cahill, Travis Jankowski, Carter Capps, Buddy Baumann, Jered Weaver, Jarred Cosart, and Alex Dickerson to name but a few of the players biding their time on the disabled list.

Game times and pitching matchups:

  • Friday, June 9, 9:10 PM CDT - Eric Skoglund (L) versus Jhoulys Chacín
  • Saturday, June 10, 3:10 PM CDT - Ian Kennedy versus Miguel Diaz
  • Sunday, June 11, 3:40 PM CDT - Jake Junis versus Dinelson Lamet

Dinelson Lamet 3 13.0 19 30.7 8 12.9 6.92 5.45 5.00 4.02 0.0 -0.3

Of the six pitchers going this weekend, only Eric Skoglund with two starts under his belt is above replacement value by both measures of WAR. Peripherals suggest that Jhoulys Chacín has pitched better than his ERA lets on, but it’s probably telling that only one starting pitcher this weekend has an ERA under 5.00 on the year, and that pitcher has pitched so little as to have rendered his ERA earned over 8.1 innings not particularly meaningful.

In other words, if you like good pitching, you’d likely be better off looking elsewhere this weekend.

There is only one squad of position players less valuable than the Royals thus far. That squad? The Padres. Their 77 wRC+ is not good. Their -0.3 fWAR is also not good. In fact, the Padres are the only unit whose fWAR is in the negative.
