Don’t look now—Royals in rear view mirror are closer than they appear.
On May 7, the Kansas City Royals were did last in the American League Central, dead last in all of Major League Baseball in runs scored per game. They kicked off the year starting 10-20, quickly digging themselves into a seven-game hole behind the first place Cleveland Indians.
It is July 25. The Royals are 51-47. Not only are they owners of the second Wild Card spot, ahead of the next team by one game, they are a half game behind the New York Yankees for the first Wild Card spot and merely 1.5 games behind Cleveland for first place in the AL Central.
Tonight, the Royals will attempt to solidify their status as playoff contenders by seeking their seventh consecutive victory. Danny Duffy will take on Michael Fulmer and the Detroit Tigers.
