Grass Creek, revisited

This week’s series marked the tenth anniversary of Grass Creek, the annual renewal now over a decade long. Mariners and Royals fight for the hearts and minds of a small, unincorporated community in Hot Springs county, Wyoming, the last front line in the war for fandom. Following this week’s sweep, Kansas City now has the high ground, but just barely, at 42-41.

The following is a selection of journal entries, letters, and speeches from players and personnel who were witness to the latest tumult of the ongoing battle for Grass Creek.

Jenny,

The trials will never cease. The gauntlet never ends. I’ve come through as healthy as I could be, but to what and where will I go next? I am sorry, my dear, I miss you terribly. And the kids, please, hug them for me.

We were victorious beyond measure, and now we move on. For now, Grass Creek is ours. Our foothold is as secure as it has ever been. Their lines folded, and though they mounted a valiant effort in the twilight, as night fell we emerged triumphant.

Have we conquered? I may not be long for the fighting. I lost my brother to the enemy in the winter, and how soon will they come for me? I am so honored, my dear, to serve and do my part, but the clock is running out.

I got back from the infirmary just in time to be shipped out. How is this supposed to...sorry. I’m using one of those voice dictation things. Feels good to be back, and I feel I did my part, but as a Czar I sometimes feel such actions are beneath me. What place does a prince have in war?

Anyway. Everyone’s doing good. The battles this week were, I don’t know. Easy, somehow. That’s difficult to say of war, but for three days we have routed their lines and hey papi what you doin’ what is that Niño I’m dictating a letter to my wife is that a microphone? How come you no let me see it Sal please don’t pick it up it’s very old wow look at this thing it have a watch out no don’t—

I received your letter, three weeks after its postmark, so I am sorry for the lateness of my reply.

This blasted war. I need the woods, the hearth, the fire. I need you. But we’re winning again. By God, we’re finally winning.

I’ll be home soon on leave. String my bow for me. I’ll make the pelts and we’ll call up Kendall and have him come by to help with the tanning. Keep the powder dry and make sure we have plenty of flint and tinder. I’m coming home, and by God I’m coming home happy.
