American League Wild Card open thread

Damn those Yankees.

MLB: New York Yankees at Miami Marlins Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

The Yankees won 100 games this year, more than all but two teams, and because they are in the eastern portion of the United States, not far from Boston, that means they finished in second place and have to participate in a one-game, loser-goes-home Wild Card game against the Oakland Athletics. The Yankees announced their roster today, and there is about a 90% chance that Kyle Higiashioka has the game-winning hit.

You may remember the last time the Oakland Athletics were in the Wild Card game, with a diving Josh Donaldson being the lasting image from that appearance four years ago. Almost zero players from that playoff team are on this year’s roster save for Jed Lowrie, who actually left for Houston for a bit before coming back to Oakland. The A’s will start former Royals pitcher Liam Hendriks, just a few months after the A’s designated him for assignment. He’ll simply be the “opener”, we’ll likely see a parade of pitchers tonight.

The game will air on TBS at 7 p.m. CT with Brian Anderson, Ron Darling, Dennis Eckersley, and Lauren Shehadi.
