Royals Rumblings - News for November 5, 2018

Congrats to Alex Gordon and Salvador Perez for winning another Gold Glove each.

“I’m honored to win the Gold Glove this year, and excited to share this award with Salvy,” Gordon said. “Every day I work with [outfield coach] Mitch Maier to be the best defender I can be on a daily basis. I’m happy to share this award with my coaches, teammates and the Royals.”

David Lesky at Baseball Prospectus Kansas City looks at potential starting pitchers the Royals should look at in free agency.

Some options are James Shields, Miguel Gonzalez (if he’s healthy), Josh Tomlin (woof), Hector Santiago, Jaime Garcia and maybe even a Drew Pomeranz if he ends up cheap enough. One other name to keep an eye on is Erasmo Ramirez. I don’t have any inside information here, but he seems like a Royals target and the reports indicate the Mariners are moving on from him and will be DFAing him shortly. I wouldn’t like that move much, but it does seem like a Dayton special.

Meibrys Viloria won the Arizona Fall League All-Star Game with a walk-off hit.

Drew Osborne at Royals Farm Report looks at the Royals pitchers from the 2016 draft like Walker Sheller.

Sheller is a guy the Royals like. He is currently in the Arizona Fall League working on his stuff. I’ve written before that Sheller needs to answer the question where have the strikeouts gone with his performance going forward. In 2018 he worked 57.1 innings, mostly at NWA, and put up a 3.30 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 2.51 BB/9, and 5.18 K/9. Sheller’s FIP and xFIP don’t back up his results so far. There is concern that there will be negative regression for him because of this and the lack of his Ks. Sheller is up to 96 at times with a slider and change. If he can find a way to lower the hits and raise the Ks, he is a viable option in the Royals pen going forward.
