The Royals will play the Reds today. Cincy was a fellow small market club who was successful much more than the Royals from 2010-2013, making the playoffs three times, but failing to ever reach the LCS. Since then, they have lost 85 or more each season, including 94 losses in each of the last two seasons.
They have gone through a rebuild and there doesn’t appear to be a bright light at the end of the tunnel. They have a few decent young players, but their lineup is still mostly age 27 or older. Their pitching is still a bit of a jumbled mess. The farm system is growing stronger - generally considered top ten in the league, but not the best farm system in the history of whatever.
So rebuilds take time. The Reds are in year four and it doesn’t seem like they close at all to contention yet.
