Weekend Rumblings - News for October 12, 2019
In his Friday notes, David Lesky writes about a dark horse to make next year’s team.
But one name I keep hearing as a real possibility is Daniel Tillo. He’s actually on the Team USA Olympic qualifying roster, which is pretty cool for him, but before he made that roster, he made a shift to the bullpen in Northwest Arkansas. His velocity increased, he used his four-seam fastball more and was able to get more strikeouts. He hasn’t been great in the Arizona Fall League, but the Royals are happy with his progress He threw just eight innings in relief, but didn’t walk a single batter and struck out 11. The big lefty could be a really fun weapon for whoever the new manager is to utilize as he can clearly go multiple innings, he can get a ground ball and with a tightened slider and the improved velocity, he can get a strikeout too.
At Royals Academy, Clint Scoles writes about the off-season and gives some background on new minor league hitting coordinator Drew Saylor.
This past year Saylor was the minor league hitting coordinator and a manager for the Pirates rookie league squad in West Virginia which got him closer to home for his family. It’s hard to decipher from podcasts and articles what Saylor’s philosophies on hitting are but one thing that stood out to me in the podcast that I listened to was that he liked to use data to help hitters decipher what they do well and what they need to adjust. Along those same lines Kevin Wilson, a well-recognized hitting coach is a fan of Saylor’s. The Royals have a talented group of hitters that are coming off difficult seasons, a change in the voice could help salvage their prospect status.
