Today is the deadline for protecting players from being moved to other teams in the Rule 5 draft, by adding them to the 40-man roster. Let’s keep an eye on Max’s thoughts from yesterday as decisions shake out.

Here is a case for protecting lefty Foster Griffin, from Alec Lewis at The Athletic.

The way in which Griffin pitched was also different in comparison to most pitching prospects in 2019. His fastball never eclipsed the mid-90s; he benefited from the sheer strategy of pitching and much less on the brute force of throwing.

“You outsmart a guy to get him out,” Griffin said. “That’s where I find joy, in the sequences that you throw. In. Out. Hard. Soft. Up. Down. When you and a catcher get on the same page in tricking guys, that’s when the game’s the most fun.”

Lynn Worthy at the KC Star checks in with a few of the higher-profile additions to the Royals farm system from this past summer, including the team’s top draft pick, Bobby Witt, Jr.

After working briefly with minor league director of performance science/player development John Wagle, Witt has already shown improved speed. He could start next season at Low-A Lexington.

“The more we’re around him as a staff, we have a greater appreciation of his game awareness, his instincts, his passion for the game,” assistant general manager/player personnel JJ Picollo said. “He plays the game the way you see 10-year-olds play little league as far as excitement getting on and off the field, just the smile on his face. That’s a really great attribute to have and I hope he never loses that.”

At Kings of Kauffman, Michael Huckins comes out guns a-blazin’ against tanking.

The Astros sign-stealing scandal is going to stay in the headlines on a regular basis. Jeff Passan reports that the punishment could extend beyond assessing fines and taking away draft picks. Please click on this story if you’d like to see MLB commissioner Rob Manfred give a serious interview while wearing a hard hat and high-vis vest. It is just the touch of absurdity your morning needs.

Speaking of the commissioner, 104 Congresspeople signed a letter basically telling Manfred to shove the MiLB “realignment” plan up his, uhh....high-vis vest.

The Braves have re-signed right-hander Chris Martin, who is still not the lead singer of Coldplay no matter how many times I check to make sure it’s not that one.

Remember Yoenis Cespedes? It has been a long while since he has played, after losing all of 2019 and big chunks of the prior two seasons to injury. However, a video briefly existed on Instagram of Cespedes taking BP.

Tottenham Hostpur are undergoing massive coaching changes as Mauricio Pochettino and all his coaching staff are “relieved of their duties.”

Disney+ has already been hacked. Change your passwords, pals.

I’m only going to dip my smallest toe into the waters of impeachment hearings right now, for this twin-on-twin violence. (It’s v. funny and we need something lighthearted, right?)
