Gamethread XIV - Cleveland at Kansas City

The Royals just avoided their first sweep of April. Can they get their first series win?

The Royals have their work cut out for them tonight as they attempt to win their first series in April. Homer Bailey will be pitching for the good guys. He has a 9.00 ERA and has only been able to pitch five innings in each of his starts so far. But there’s good news in there, too. He’s striking out a ridiculous, for a starting pitcher, 13.5 batters per 9 innings. His walks aren’t unreasonable. And there’s reason to hope he might turn into a serviceable starter, yet. In that scenario the Royals could easily flip him at the deadline for a pretty good haul considering how much they’re paying him and how much even average starting pitchers can be worth.

Cleveland will counter with rookie right-hander Jefry Rodriguez. The Dominican Republic native will be making his first start of 2019. He pitched in 14 games last year, eight of which were starts, with a 5.71 ERA. He struck out very nearly as many as he walked and while he has an above average groundball rate his BABIP was a likely unsustainably low .240 which means that unless he gets the walks under control he might actually be even worse than he seemed.
