David Cone has a new book out and he talks about how he was traded out of Kansas City.

“I was completely floored by it,” Cone said of the trade. “I was the hometown kid, about to crack the rotation. ... I went to my locker, packed up my bag and left as quickly as I could. I didn’t know how to act. You just feel rejected.”

Cone had an idea why he was traded, and that day more than three decades ago is never far from his mind.

“To this day still,” Cone said. “The best I can tell, it’s a combination of things. My reputation as a minor-leaguer, butting heads with pitching coaches and being stubborn and my style of pitching, changing arm angle and throwing sidearm was really frowned upon by some of the pitching coaches.”

Sam McDowell writes about when the Royals might make changes to the rotation.

The Royals don’t appear to make wholesale changes. With a young team finding its way, there’s an element of patience.

But with a limit.

“There’s still urgency to it,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. “You’re going to have to come out and do something. We’re not gonna look at it all year long like that. You’re gonna have to do something.”

Drew Storen will be throwin for the Naturals.

John Cavalgno at Notes from the Sally scouts some Royals pitchers at Lexington, like Jonathan Bowlan.

Bowlan is an interesting arm, for a big man he pounds the zone and he has two effective pitches. I wouldn’t expect him to have too much difficulty in the lower levels but he’ll need something else vs lefties in the high minors. Right now I’m leaning 7th inning arm or perhaps a hybrid multi inning reliever. If there is in a fact a 3rd pitch, maybe he’s a #4 SP.
